Two weeks prior to the start of my reservation, I received an email stating the my reservation had been cancelled because the access road that was under construction since November 2020 was still not complete. I'm not sure why an access road should take more than three months and I'm also not sure why that particular construction company wasn't kicked off site and another company hired to complete the project.
I was able to secure another reservation. However - upon arrival to the campground, my group discovered that all of the permanent restrooms and shower houses in the area were closed with no explanation why. And to find that information on the website, you needed to dig down about four web pages. There were port-o-johns available, but in my opinion, there needed to be more of them. In the area that I was camping (site 281), there was only one and it filled up within two days. Thankfully, it was cleaned, but if you walked down the loop, there were three. Not sure why three could not have been put in the other area as well. The temporary shower trailers were nice, but they were hooked up to the water lines at the permanent houses, so again, I'm not quite sure why the permanent houses needed to be closed.
The stone parking areas for each site were atrocious. Small aggregate had been place down, along with rocks the size of baseballs. It's a miracle no one rolled their ankles. I have enjoyed camping at Shenango in the past, but the communication on what was really going on at the campground and what campers could expect needed to be communicated a lot better than what it was. Also being charged full price for a campsite when half the amenities were not available was a little over the top as well. Hopefully the access road is completed by next year and the bathrooms are open again.
