First let me say that we love this campground and stay here 2-3 times a year. Its hard to get a site on the full hookup Lakeside Loop though so be prepared to book early with the six month rolling reservation window in mind. I dont remember the exact number of sites on that loop. Low 20s? But two are host sites, one is tent only, one is a double site, and one is held back for fire service, etc. Limited supply equals high demand. The vast majority of sites are very private and youll often feel like youre the only person there. On most sites, the sewer hookup is at the back. And on some its uphill, making it impossible to use (water doesnt flow uphill). A sidewinder doesnt help because its only 9 inches or so high. So be prepared to use the dump station. If you dont require hookups, there are some beautiful sites on the other loops. Big John in particular has some great sites! The bathhouses are very nice and spaced to be convenient to most sites. The road into the campground has some tight, blind curves that might be a bit of a challenge for big rigs. Take it easy and youll be fine. The location could not be better for enjoying all that Asheville has to offer and it literally adjoins the NC Arboretum property. And theres a Blue Ridge Parkway entrance right next to the Arboretum entrance too! Keep in mind that only a portion is open at this time due to storm damage. Going north, its closed just past the Folk Art Center. Going south, its closed just a few miles (5-10?) past the entrance near the campground. Enjoy!

My favorite site. Greenway in rear of site has large opening in forest. Allows me to receive 2 or 3 different over the air HDTV channels and at least one bar of Verizon service.

Lake Powhatan is always a great place to stay when we visit the Asheville area. Winter camping can sometimes be a challenge and although we experienced temps below freezing, we had no problems. We appreciate the heated restrooms and showers and the full hook-ups for our RV.

We had a wonderful time. The campground was beautiful and very quiet. We were so impressed with the hosts at the campground. They were younger than many campground hosts. All of the hosts we met and spoke with were very friendly and super helpful. They were helpful without being intrusive or bossy. They were background people who managed to keep the campground immaculate and well run. Bathrooms were spotless. All hookups worked beautifully. It was a pleasure to camp at Lake Powhatan.

Absolutely beautiful park! Very private sites, all seemed quite level, spacious and LOTS of woods surrounding each site. Hookups were good and conveniently located. We had site 044 Lakeside loop. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The road leading in was a bit narrow in spots through the subdivision, but certainly accessible by any size rig. TONS of trails to explore and the beach (although it was rainy and cold and we didn't use it) looked to be a nice size, but was located quite a walk from our campsite. Close to Asheville and highway exit, so lots of shopping, restaurants, etc. a short drive away. Would have liked to stay more than 1 night.

Many sites were not level and sloped quite a bit. Yes, it's the mountains, but at least include that description on the listings. Our site, no. 44, sloped quite a lot. Also, the campground must have recently banned dog fencing around your camper since the online rules don't show or mention anything about this. Well, we set ours up, and got the nasty little ticket note from staff next day warning us about a $25 fine if we did not remove. How nice and pleasant of the staff - and we never did see the friendly host that some of the other reviews brag about. At least the views and hiking are good, bringing our rating up to 2 stars.

We stayed at Lake Powhatan in our RV for two nights. We liked the location. The sites were spacious and far enough apart for some privacy. There was a lot of hiking and we even found a waterfall. The bathrooms were nice and a couple of them had working heaters. As far as getting in contact with anyone during the winter itโ€™s pretty much impossible. Tried all 3 numbers. But all the information we needed was online.

Lake Powhatan is a fantastic place. The campground is also typically a good time. We've had many stays, and will continue to. However, it's now clear to us that there are a lot of inconsiderate campers around (Lake Powhatan specifically). Therefore, if you're coming - be prepared for the fact that you may be subjected to unsolicited, loud music. The music may come accompanied by an unleashed dog or two. And, be prepared for the campers playing the music to ignore requests to respect their neighbors. My point is, Lake Powhatan is a great place in the woods. Just don't come expecting a quiet and relaxing stay in the woods. It's often a roll of the dice (even in January).
