Stayed there on a weekday after Labor Day weekend. Able to obtain a campsite right away. Quiet throughout the night. Has bear box, grille (this was restricted due to fire risk), picnic table. Bathroom has mirrors, paper towels, flush toilets. Easy access to trail heads in the Longmire area.

Only difficulty was when we tried to go up to Summerland from Cougar rock. As they are in different quadrants of the park a 'timed entry' permit was needed. Unfortunately there is no internet provider in the park, therefore no way to apply for a permit. Only way we could transit to the summerland quadrant was to rise before 4:30 AM and arrive before 7:00 AM at the summerland entrance. Surely the park can do better for people who are already camping within Mt Rainier Park!!

Great campground with lots to do close by and easier access to Paradise. Facilities are alright - need a bit of TLC, but nice to have flushing toilets and proper dish cleaning area. While we were surprised there wasn't a fire ban, you can no longer buy firewood at the campground and need to buy at Longmire for $15!! Seems a bit steep when it's typically $5 elsewhere...

Very nice campground. Lots of sites but still feels very private as there are lots of trees between each site. It's nice to have a place to park an RV and a flat spot for a tent or a kitchen area. Nice bathrooms. Easy walk to trails and access to both paradise and Longmire. Only issue is firewood. They state that firewood should come from no more than 50 miles away which is completely understandable. However the firewood avilable for sale at Longmire is $15 per bundle. They had one bundle available and it had 5 pieces in it. Small pieces....So each small piece of wood was $3. Yet, they are in the process of thining the diseased trees around the campground and there are hundreds of downed trees. Needless to say people have been taking wood from these. When you make something prohibitively expensive you encourage people to use other resources.

The Best Campground to stay inside the National Park and visit/hike the places on Paradise, Longmire side. We stayed here for 3 days and did back-to-back hikes of Skyline Trail, Camp Muir. Spend one day of sightseeing and doing small easy hikes of Nisqually Vista trail, Narada falls (lower viewpoint), Reflection lake, Drive Steven Canyon. Glad we got this opportunity to stay at Cougar Campground. Previous year we had a reservation but had to cancel our trip as our camping tent site was under hazardous trees. This time got to see what the site of a hazardous tree looks like. The Rangers are doing an amazing job of keeping the Campground maintained.

The Pros - Great location, nice flat tent sites, great evening ranger programThe Cons - Bathrooms were not not in working order, and one of the water services was also down. Facilities are old and could use some repair. This was a great spot for us to explore Paradise and the surrounding amenities of Mount Rainier.

Cougar Rock is a great choice for camping on Rainier. Some of the sites have smaller spaces for tents so pay attention to the size when you reserve it. There are no showers but great access to the mountain and all the hiking trails close by. And if you are looking for some tough climbs it's a great base for a few days of road cycling. Having the Longmire and Paradise area close by allows a camper to have someone else cook a meal for you once in a while or provides the opportunity to buy that one item you forgot to pack.
