We have been traveling to Big Bend twice a year for nearly 25 years. We have always been very pleased with the site and the mangers. It is quiet and somewhat private for camping and great for children. There is no electricity -but this has never been a concern for us. Over the years they have made improvements such as blacktop roads and a shower house. Since our initial visit, there have always been potable water, flushing toilet houses (all loops) and vault toilets (1st and 2nd loop). The shower houses were a nice addition. The camp managers do what they can and keep the facilities clean, but we have noticed over the years that the care the Forest Service takes with the forest maintenance has progressively gotten worse. They bring is the "whacker" that chops everything off at the street line and have all but stopped in park undergrowth maintenance. They have allowed the Autumn Olive to completely invade the area, it is everywhere. This year was especially troublesome, again, not the park managers fault, but they were clearly not prepared for the opening season. We were there the first week. There was no potable water available, a huge issue for those who need to travel light and have come to rely on it. Additionally, there were no flush-able toilets on any loop and no shower house available. There were vault toilets on the 1st and 2nd loop, but we were on the third loop with no facilities. Again, an issue for those who have come to rely on this. It is at least a 4 miles trek to go out for water or supplies – 9+ if it is after the store closes. Having reservations, you would have thought an alert would have been sent or an alert on the website. But nothing. We contacted recreation.gov and they did allow us a small adjustment on our stay, however, as a cautionary comment, we would recommend campers, especially those going early, go self-contained!
