Campsite was great! The tent spot was level. The location is perfect for visits to Empire, Glen Arbor and Traverse City. Be sure to check out St. Ambrose, Empire Beach, Shipwreck Cafe, Broomstick and of course the Dune ClumbKristie M

This campground is located in a more remote part of upper Michigan on the eastern shore of upper Lake Michigan. Very beautiful area. The campground was a near primitive campground, but it did have well maintained vault toilets, and a lot of water stations where you could get fresh well water. There are plenty of trails in the area. One area that I particularly like was walking to the sand dune BeachYoure allowed to use generators in part of the campground, but not all of it. I thought the staff was very friendly and helpful. My cat got away from me while I was there, and I had several members of the staff as well as other campers, giving me reports on where they had seen my cat. He eventually turned up. It was an enjoyable campground to spend almost 2 weeks at and I would do it again. The only real negative I can think of is that theres ticks in the area and I got several on me while I was there so you have to check yourself for ticks and your pets for ticks. I found a nice big tick on my cat.

The campground was in a great location. There are several trails nearby and easy access to the beach. The campground was clean and mostly quiet. The tent sites have nice, leveled places to set up your tent. My only complaint is that there are only vault toilets and no showers. I've stayed at other National Park Service campgrounds that had normal bathrooms and showers and was disappointed that this campground didn't. That said, I would camp here again if in the area.

D H Day Campground is my favorite in all the world, beating out Paradise E of Eugene OR and Leelanau SP further up the peninsula. I love the easy dune walk to the bay, the view of the Manitou Islands, (with an occasional freighter through the passage, especially at night!). Also easy access to hiking Alligator Hill, visiting Glen Haven, Sleeping Bear, and meals at Art's Tavern. We've reached it by bicycle more often than by car over the last 35 years. Swimming in the clear water is fantastic.
