We had a fantastic camping experience! The restrooms were clean and well-maintained, with running water and nice showers. There was even a separate room for washing kitchen supplies, which was very convenient. The camping spots were well-separated, offering plenty of privacy, and the location was close to a trail that leads to Lake Michigan. One thing to note: the electrical connection is a bit far from the campsites, so if youre tent camping, youll likely need a long extension cord. However, its perfectly suited for trailers.Overall, we were very happy with the experience and would highly recommend it. Wed go back in a heartbeat!

We camped here for the first time and we will be back! The campground facilities were very well maintained and the sites were spaced out well. Enjoyed the paved camping pads, and conveniently located bathrooms and trash dumpster/recycling/fresh water locations. The park is so beautiful. It is a campground for nature lovers that don't mind driving to see things as the park is so vast. Paddling the S. Platte River nearby was a favorite activity. The beaches are beautiful but quite a long walk or bike ride, or again a car ride to get to them. It is not a great campground for families with kids who want to have convenient playgrounds, pools, game rooms, etc.

We love this spot. The campsites are nicely spread out. There are bathrooms available as well. Close beach nearby (about a 3 minute drive). Could very easily be biked or hiked. The rangers are super nice and friendly. Rules are very clear. The past two times we’ve been, it’s been very quiet and peaceful. A wonderful getaway. Not to mention, you’re close to Empire, MI (about 10 minute drive) and the Pierce Stocking Scenic drive. There are trails around the camp which are beautiful. Highly recommend.

I had two days to kill between commitments, and the Platte River campground was ideally located, a convenient meeting point for my partners in the next adventure. I selected a campsite adjacent to the old railroad grade to the shoreline, and spent my downtime hiking to the beach and back via a side trip to the Platte River fish weir. At the weir, I spoke with a local volunteer guard who was attempting to enforce the local fishing restrictions. He told me a tale of the history of salmon and trout in the Great Lakes, the efforts of the DNR (now EGLE) to control lampreys and restore the fish population, including an incident when their management of the artificial hatchery resulted in the pollution of Platte Lake, angering the local residents greatly. In partial settlement of the lawsuit, the weir was constructed and operation of the hatchery was limited. He was not able to answer two of my burning questions however. If the establishment of the Coho and Chinook populations has been so successful, why do we need the hatchery at all? It would seem to me that the hatchery could be closed, the weir removed, and let the salmon live their lives naturally in the natural stream. Why were Coho and Chinook selected in the first place, rather than reestablishing the original lake trout species?
