We enjoyed our stay! The sites felt well spaced apart but not too far from the bathroom or water spigot. Being on the lake side would have been preferred but we were happy to have found a site only a few weeks out from our trip. The steps to the beach near our campsite were broken and roped off, that would have made our experience more enjoyable. We hiked the White Birch Trail at the campground and enjoyed it but it was obviously not well maintained the trail was extremely thin at parts. We highly recommend the chapel rock loop but go early in the morning (before 8)

Campground was beautiful, facilities were clean. Camp host was nice and helpful. The only negative thing would be this campground is difficult to get in to, yet there were many sites un occupied the whole time we were there.

The good-Camp host was pleasant and kind. The bathrooms were sufficiently placed and maintained throughout the camp ground. Water spigots were nearby and taste of water was great. Camp trash was well maintained. Sunsets and serenity of the campground is worth the effort. The Bad -The stairs were washed out and broken and only a warning tape was put up. Disappointed how difficult it was to get to the beach and dangerous for young children or the elderly. I didnt realize we couldnt have a changing/wash tent. That was disappointing and all grey water used at the campsite is disposed of in the camp pit toilet so I guess I dont understand this rule but be aware. Also, we enjoyed the privacy of site 23 but dont expect it to be a good site for a car tent as this site would not allow that due to the elevation of the site. The picnic table was also slanted due to the hill and not pleasant for our whole family to sit at do to the angle of the table. It was my first time at this campground and although a lot of people rave about it a lot of the sites had no privacy and strange backpackers walk through on the hiking trail all the time. Also- you are at least 30 minutes from anywhere so bring everything you need before arriving. Happy trails

OK. Nice hosts. But they were dealing with a loss and withdrawn, perhaps less vigilant. My site, opposite the stretch of the lake side sites, was great. The Lake sites had little privacy between them,. BUT, I was supposed to be in a generator free zone and of course some idiot turned on a generator at 11:30pm for about 20 minutes. Shook me out of sleep. Then there were the two big pickup trucks having a non-stop party, with big dogs, throughout the day and into the night. They were located far from the hosts and no one calmed them down. This is why I come to the UP to get away from LOUD idiots. The stairs down to the beach are wiped out by storms, but if you have mobility, you can zig zag down the steep sand dunes. Coming back up is a challenge. It was a clean campsite overall, just louder than I expected. Beautiful Sunsets. North Country Trail runs right down the middle of the campground and out past Site 30, and again, loud talking backpackers early in the morning woke us up from a deep sleep. Site 15 on the lake is a mess with no discernible driveway or parking as stated in previous reviews. Nice Day hikes though on the NCT out and back in both directions from the campground. Gran Marais is your closest town and little traffic on the roads. They also have a stunning public rocky beach. Nice diner and a few bars. I loved this area of PRNL better than the Munising end-less tourists, even with the loud knuckle-heads at camp.

Absolutely beautiful views! Will definitely be back to camp again! The only downfall are the biting flies so bring bug spray!!! The campground is right off H-58 which is the main road to easily access all of the popular places to see the rock cliffs.

The campground is amazing! Best views with beach access. Clean toilets. The only thing I didn’t like was the need for reservations. Several spaces were reserved with no one ever showing up. Perfectly good spots wasted by people who don’t cancel.

Beautiful spot. However, half of the campground was on occupied, even though they said it was full. With the online reservation system, a lot of people just dont show up. I strongly believe that they should cancel for anyone that doesnt show up by five or 6 PM, to allow people to use those spots. There were some beautiful spots on the water right across the road from us wish we wouldve loved to have taken. Change the stupid system!

My husband and I have been visiting Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore for 25 years and it has become one of my families favorite places to visit. I am extremely happy that the camping can now be reserved in advance. Once the roads became paved it became very difficult to get a campsite at Twelve Mile Beach and Hurricane River campgrounds. Planning a vacation without knowing if you would be able to have a site was frustrating.A few things we have learned over the years: Nights can be very cold even during the warmest part of the summer. Wood is not available to buy at the campgrounds, make sure you buy some on your way in. In the end of July or beginning of august is the sand fly season, only high DEET bug spray will stop them from biting. No showers, no flush toilets, no electricity, and no cell service in the campgrounds. Twelve Mile Beach is a beautiful campground. It is rugged, quiet, and peaceful. The sites on the lakeside of the drive are our favorites but they are open and not very private, if you prefer something a little more secluded, try the sites on the opposite side of the drive. It is still only a very short walk across the drive and lakeside campsites to reach the beach but because they are more wooded and secluded you can't hear the sounds of the wave on the shore as much. Although they are also warmer than the lakeside sites when those cold winds come off Lake SuperiorSite #23 is a very private site unlike some sites that are wide open but it should be noted that it is very sloped. The tent pad and fire pit area are fairly level but the area for the picnic table is very sloped which can be uncomfortable. Following the example of a previous visitor we were able to make the table more level with the use of some rocks. Having camped several times at Twelve Mile Beach this site is a good option if you can't book a site on the lake side or if you prefer a more private site.
