To much drive drive-through traffic

The campsite is roomy and private. It is an easy walk to the beach and bathrooms. My only issue with the campsite (#1 lower level) is that when it rains, there are many deep puddles of water because of how the water runs into the campsite. However, the water drains relatively quickly (several hours after a downpour).

Stayed in campsite 1 of the lower loop. Its right at the entrance to the campground, so there was a fair amount of traffic with camper coming and going. But the site is a slightly more isolated than most of the other sites. So that was a trade-off I thought was worth it. 3 minutes walk from the beach and close to the bathrooms (if you're camping with kids). Good time! Will try to come back to pictured rocks for sure.

Beautiful lakeshore and trails. Campground was really small and very quiet.

We couldn’t even end up camping because of the overwhelming number of mosquitoes. We had to turn back around and get a hotel room. The campground was ok, looked small and not worth the camping experience

We spent two nights at Site #1 in Hurricane River (Lower) Campground July 3-5, 2022. Great access to trails and the beach from the campground! It's awesome to have a site reservable 4 days out from arrival for more spontaneous travelers. However, the site is right at the intersection of the parking lot for the beach and campground loop entry. Lots of traffic from cars going past the full parking lot and having to turn around/back out of the campground. Very open, no privacy, lots of traffic for this site. Other sites much more secluded and private. This really should be the Campground Host site or additional parking, if anything. Bathroom was two pit toilets. Bathrooms got heavy use from visitors to the beach and Au Sable Lighthouse trail that leaves from the campground. Kind of ruined it for the campers... Really need separate bathrooms for day use and campground. Or flush toilets with sinks to keep things cleaner. Lots of toilet paper on floor along with sand and soiling from messy visitors. Not ideal for rustic tent campers without a way to wash up after...

I threw together a last minute four day camping trip to the UP and this was my only site not in backcountry. It was still quiet, beautiful, and one of the cleanest campgrounds I’ve ever seen.

The location was great! Our camping spot (#1) was less than 100 yds to the beach and less than 50 yds to the vault toilets (no running water in the restrooms but by the beach day-use parking lot there is a drinking fountain with lower faucet that was exceptionally good water to use for drinking, cooking, cleaning, etc). We could hear the waves crashing as we slept in our RV. There are a lot of trees that help block the winds from the lake and shade the campsite. We did have issues with our solar because of the trees shading our RV, but decided to move the RV to the upper lot during the day where it was more open to sunlight. Our RV is 25ft long and we pulled an 18ft car trailer behind it. The ranger suggested that we park the trailer up at the overflow lot for the week. It didn't cause any issues and allowed us to keep both our RV and SUV at the campsite. The camp hosts were extremely warm and welcoming. They answered any questions we had and greeted us at the site as we arrived. Right outside the vault toilets there was a nice butterfly garden where we just missed the mass migration of Monarchs but were able to see multiple caterpillars and subsequently, the chrysalis' hanging from the different flora. The campsite beach access boast a nice water fall and spectacular views of the Michigan sunsets!! Not a crowed beach at all, especially in the evening. There is so much to explore with short little day hikes to the many waterfalls in the region or the informative and exciting Picture Rock Cruise Tour in Munising, MI. Highly recommend the boat tour to get the best view of the Pictured Rocks. My suggestion would be to take a tour later in the afternoon to allow the sun to come over and illuminate the rocks for improved photos. Otherwise they will be slightly back-lit and not turn out as well. Recommend the Lower Hurricane Campsite to anyone wanting to visit the National Lake Shore. Can't wait to come back soon!!

The river is awesome. Cool rocks. Camp hosts were friendly, helpful & well informed with the area. Wildlife. You can walk to the beach. I saw a hare.
