Beautiful, peaceful location in the woods within walking distance of gorgeous sunsets over Lake Superior. Short hike to lighthouse is well worth it.

Camped in the lower loop. Both sites were great. Each site is separated from the next by a patch of woods which gives a definite sense of solitude and privacy.

Great campground! Was taken aback by bring scolded by camp host for our happy chatter around the campfire. We had three sites, 10 mature adults (alcohol was not a factor) and had to break up our family time around 9 because we were too loud for her. I understand quiet time, but it wasn't like we were partying and whooping it up.

Great location for rustic camping along Lake Superior shoreline. Be sure to take H58 toward Grand Marais and stop along the way to see walkouts to the lake. Also Lake Superior Brewery in Grand Marais.

We stayed at the Lower Hurricane River Campground for a week in mid-August. Beautiful campsites provide privacy from neighboring sites. The parking for the AuSable Lighthouse trail (part of the North Country Trail) just before the entrance to the campground is typically filled for most of the day. The trail goes through the campground. The campground's water station is shared with hikers, as are the spacious and generally clean vault toilet facilities. There's a short and easily accessible pathway leading down to the beach. Trash is picked up daily, and maintenance is provided to the campground facilities. On our last night the batteries to the water station had failed, so we had to drive 0.2 miles to the Upper Hurricane River Campground to get water for drinking and cooking. The beach is great for watching sunsets, and campsites are convenient to multiple hiking trails.

This campground was perfect for us. Sites are very private and steps away from the river and the beach.

The setting on the North Shore of the U.P. is incomparable. Campgrounds were clean, quiet, and scenic. We enjoyed walking to the light station and stopping along the way to enjoy the beach. Going west on the rustic trail was a highlight. Every evening we watched the sunset on the beach--It is the envy of Key West. My wife, dog, and I are rejuvenated and are already planning our next trip to Pictured Rocks. We checked out the Cruise line's dog kennel for use during the 2 1/2 hour coastal tour and it looks safe and adequate for our pooch. The vault toilets were well kept.

Thanks so much,
Ken Adams
