Best river campground on the Potomac

We didnt know until we arrived that it was bike week. We are frequent campers and came from NC to paddle the Potomac. The pit toilets were disgusting and full. The only way we could continue our stay was to walk over to the walk-in campsite portajohn. On Sunday, we were awaken by a lady throwing up outside her camper. Someone else had thrown their uneaten eggs, sausage and hotdogs on the edge of their campsite. I know there are budget shortages, but there needs to be more cleaning of the pit toilets and a trash bin during the busy summer months. There needs to be enough oversight to offer safe hygiene. We were disappointed.

Great view of the river and clear starry nights.
Make sure to take a swim in the river!

Great camping location along the C&O Canal Trail and very near to the western end of the Western Maryland Rail trail. Sites 6-9 have a view down to the Potomac River. Number 6 is the best location in term of a river view from the small knoll on which the campground is built. The campground is unstaffed. We didn't see any NPS rangers during our 2-night stay. A road runs past the campground to a boat launch on the river, and locals seem to like to drive down here in the middle of the night, perhaps just to wake the campers with their loud vehicles. We rode the C&O to the eastern end of the WMRT about 28 miles downriver and returned along the WMRT. If you're hiking you might enjoy hiking to the Indigo Tunnel a mile or so downriver along either trail or the old rail bridge over the Potomac which marks the western end of the WMRT (both the bridge and tunnel are closed off). Although the C&O Canal Trail passes under the trestle there is no access between the two trails at that point

Tiny, tiny loop with 9 sites very close together. Lots of daytime traffic to canal, bicycle trail traffic. Unsupervised campground. No squatters or conflicts, only one other site occupied. Bathroom and water available but must carry all trash out.

Nice location, beautiful view of the Potomac. Easily located from the road, and of course, right off the tow path. Sites are roomy enough for a small group to occupy a couple of adjacent sites, and larger groups can use the spacious group site.
