Pretty expensive at $35 a night for just pit toilets, but it’s all about location, location, location. Our site (21) was huge! We could have easily fit 2-3 tents on the grassy area and another car on the pavement.
We had bunnies that lived at our site and the highlight of our trip was catching an owl swooping down in the dark trying to catch a gopher!
Unfortunately, nearby Limekiln SP’s trails are still closed, but they will start clearing them July 15th.
The main challenge is the abundant poison oak. It's all over the campsite and campgrounds. Make sure you know how to identify it and what to do if you come into contact with it.
Here's our top shares:
Directions:
Google maps is still giving incorrect directions, if you are coming from the north, you must go down to Paso Robles and then cut across on 46. Highway 1 has a section above the campground that is closed until about early summer.
Hiking:
The trails directly across from campsite is still closed due to the fire and rockslides. Camp host told me that they have trailblazers coming in every 2 weeks, but it might take a while to reopen for safety. Limekiln also closed for hiking, possibly will open in April. We drove 17 miles south to the Salmon Creek Ranger station area, and did a gorgeous hike there instead.
Facilities:
I'm sure you've read no water is available on site. We brought a 7 gallon aqua-tainer (Amazon) for handwashing and dishes, and large gallon jugs for drinking, more than enough. The bathrooms were decent, although they ran out of toilet paper more than once. We always bring tp camping so we were prepared for that.
Site:
We stayed at 21 and 8, one night each.. LOVE both. Sites on cliff are obviously better, and a couple by the highway side (high 20s) would not have been big enough for our tent.
General:
It was really windy the first day, like our tent would have blown away if we hadn't put all our heavy stuff in there. It was a fun adventure ?? so if the weather is hinting at a storm, Absolutely bring tent stakes and confidence.
The hike down to the beach was awesome, yoy go down about 100 feet by a creek to a large rocky beach. We had so much fun finding a cave to explore and enjoying the cove. The trail is overgrown in areas, and there was poison oak, but we avoided it. Be cautious on trail if not very fit.
