Manzanita Lake and Lassen NP are beautiful and to be treasured. The lake is wonderful for families. Unfortunately the staff has been cut drastically. We never saw a ranger, the museum at the northern entrance was closed, no one was collecting fees or enforcing rules. Visitors this year were an especially well behaved group but had been any trouble, things would have been bad.

We had a lovely, spacious campsite and enjoyed hiking the adjacent trails and paddling on Lake Manzanita. At dusk, the bats were amazing to watch from the campground beach. Nice to have showers available. As of June 23, most of the main road was still closed due to snow.

Manzanita Lake is a great place to camp for families! We camped with three other families (all in our own sites) and we had a great time. The sites are well-maintained and not too close together, but be aware that if you do reserve in summer, the sites without shade will get extremely hot. The lake is fun for kids to splash around in (it doesn't have a beach or specific wading area) and you can rent or bring your own kayaks or other person powered watercraft. Most sites require a short, flat walk to the lake. The bathrooms are well maintained and are usually stocked with toilet paper and have flush toilets, sinks and mirrors (bring your own soap!). The bathrooms also have a dishwashing area if you do so desire. The kids loved riding their bikes freely throughout the campground--I highly recommend taking bikes or scooters if you have them. The visitor center has some fun things to see and is worth a look. The camp store is pretty well-stocked with staples and clothing but there was a firewood shortage last year so be sure to pick some up early. Our kids loved riding bikes down to the store on our last day and getting soft serve ice cream--a fun treat! I didn't use the showers at the camp store while there but I heard from the other families that they are nice and hot but sometimes there can be a line. The campground was a good jump off point for some great hikes--paradise meadow was our favorite--but be advised the camp is not close to the volcanic park, so be prepared for a long drive if that is your destination. This will be our fourth year this year and we will continue to return!
