I've been camping at Manzanita Lake since childhood (65 years ago).Lassen Volcanic National Park is the best kept secret in the NPS.On heavy snowfall years most of the high elevation trails aren't open until late July, or early August. The road through the park opened at the end of June this year.

Shower and laundry house were under construction. So we were told to drive 14 miles away to use those facilities in town. Nothing posted on website that this was happening, a courtesy email to people would have been helpful. Also no gas available there until our last day. Womens restrooms almost always out of hand soap.

Enjoyed the campground and access to hikes. Loved the Ridge Lakes hike.

Typical confusion upon arrival . . are we supposed to do something with the little reservation note? Do the Rangers just wait until someone is in the wrong spot and then break up the argument? LOL.

My family (4 young kids, husband, and myself) camped for 3 nights at the manzanita lake campground and loved being in the mountains and taking a break. We had a fantastic time enjoying the views while we hiked to Kings Creek Falls and Bumpass Hell. We loved exploring the lava tube near Old Station and also spent time playing at Lake Helen, and exploring the lake and creek right near the campground. All of that was wonderful. We did have one very negative and frustrating experience during our stay. Prior to driving up, we noticed that the kayak rentals had just barely stopped so we called to confirm that it had ended for the season. We were delighted to learn that they were actually continuing rentals for a few more days even beyond our trip. The first full day we were there, we went to rent kayaks an hour before the rentals closed (posted on a sign at the boat launch and confirmed on the phone as well as online). We were told that they had closed for the day (an hour early?) and to try earlier the next day. Disappointed, but understanding that things happen, we changed our plans for the afternoon and came back first thing the next day. We were there within an hour of opening, and were now told that they had closed for the season. We brought up that we had been told just yesterday that we should come in today for rentals and also that multiple signs in the park said rentals were still open. After being given MANY different, and largely conflicting, reasons why rentals were unavailable, the employee said he called the ONE person who does the rentals and he was out of town. So now how could we argue with that? It was a very frustrating experience to constantly be told different things about the availability of the rentals. We wasted a lot of time going down to the store repeatedly, including driving back from a hike early to get back an hour before closing.

Great campground with lots of activity as folks come and go to see other areas in the park. Walking distance to the Loomis Museum, Manzanita Lake, and the camper store. A few great trails start right from the Manzanita Lake area... Not a lot of sites for the bigger rigs but there are some. Restrooms are clean and while there this year were receiving some updates to roofs etc. Things really quiet down around dinner time and thankfully the generator policy is quite restrictive.
