Stayed here for 4 days on site 46. This particular site is on a weird angle from the road, had to do a few moves to back in. Site is pretty big but site 45 is very close. I believe this site (45) is an emergency site they use for people that can fit there RV in other sites. Restrooms were close but they were not in the best condition. I love the many trees, plenty of shade.
We did encounter a bear on the road the first day driving in. Showers were only a 10 minute walk behind the cedar grove market. Pretty clean and well kept. Make sure to get your token at the Market before going to the shower. It was $1.50 per token for 5 minutes. They have 4 showers available open from 7 to 8, closed around 2 for cleaning.
The drive was great. I will recommend getting the outer site near the stream or river if you like the sound of running water. Sentinel is the only campground open at the moment because of the damage the other neighboring site were damaged from the big snow storm from last year. We did have some rude neighbors that were very loud till 3 in the morning one night. Probably a family of 40. Some how they got 2 warning ticket??
Reservation was easy to get a month prior. Fill your tank with gas to be on the safe side. The only issue I had was the signage was difficult to read or see if not paying attention to get to the site. I went around 2 times till i found the right entrance to get to the site
This park has gone to 100% on-line / phone reservations - no walk-ups. But the prominent signage at the campground is misleading - "campground is full" - when of course it is not. The signage needs to catch up with the new program, if it is permanently adopted.
I made a reservation for a particular campsite. But when I arrived at 11 pm, it was occupied. So I took the open spot next to me. The next morning I am confronted by two armed rangers demanding to know why I parked there. After showing them my reservation on my phone, they were a bit more civil about it, and promised that someone would be along to check me in shortly. No one ever did for the 5 days I was there.
There's no cell service at Cedar Grove, and the internet access at Cedar Grove is not available to campers, so when I wanted to extend my stay for another night, I had to drive 60 miles round trip up to Grant Grove so I could access the internet and update my reservation. Its really wasteful, and unnecessary. The concessionaire or the NPS should have WiFi available near the ranger station or the lodge, or there should be some way to access the recreation.gov webpage at laptop or kiosk somewhere in Cedar Grove.
Finally, I don't understand why the concessionaire was allowed to not open the showers and laundry this summer.
