Lodgepole Campground is very nice and close to some great hikes. Site #36 is listed as "equipment required" but not "no tents". We had a camper van and 2 tents at the site. The ranger came by in the morning and told us it was actually "RV only" and to move the tents onto the asphalt pad which was insane. Would not recommend this site if you intend to put up any tents on it.

This is one of the nicest campgrounds ever. I felt very comfortable here. What's not good, is that the visitor center was closed and there were not even signs telling people where to go if they needed any information.

Lodgepole has always been a favorite due to the nice micro-clime, the river proximity, and the nice vibe of the campers there. For 40 years I have always given full stars for this campground, but the loop we were in this time turned out to have no bathroom near by, not a factor for us in an RV, but the tent folk making a midnight run would have a trek to reach one. Our site was full sun but most have adequate shade. Water faucets were plentiful. Beware that due to their peculiar seasonal closure of much of the campground, this campground is ALWAYS past capacity for bookings and difficult to achieve. If you are new to this park we recommend Crystal Cave tour, hikes around Crescent meadow, and definitely, try to be in the Giant Forest area (Congress trail or long meadow area) an hour before sunset when the setting sun lights up the Sequoias...magic. Most years a short hike to Tokapah falls is beautiful. Drought conditions this year have reduced all river flows to minimal. Long hikers should like the Lakes Trail up to Heather, Emerald/Astor, and Pear lakes [6.2mi each way]. Beware the altitude!Construction in the park CAN be annoying and disruptive at times.

Let me give you an actual helpful review.
The campground was great, I would recommend the upper loop because there is more shade and the river gets bigger up there. You can definitely fit 2 big tents on any campground. there is no designated space anymore. The showers are closed for the rest of this season but bathing in the river was still nice. No phones. There are pay phones at the visitor center/grocery store. It is 20 degrees cooler than the bottom of the mountain. It said 70 degrees on google weather but in reality it was 90, the cities below the mountain were around 110. Great campsite loved it. Saw bears. campsites are far enough apart. If you want it more quiet camp in no generator areas.

Have fun!

Campsite is very clean, running water tap is right next to the site. Restrooms at the campsite are very clean and maintained. The market place is very close by, few minutes walk from the site. Also, the stream is a minute's walk from the site and the kids enjoyed the water a lot. The water in the stream was low, and rocky, but it was relaxing to dip your legs & hands in the stream (June 2021). For campfire, you could use the broken/fallen trees, probably don't even need to buy separate fire wood from store. There's guest wifi if you drive up to the Wuksachi loge. A couple of things we didn't like about this particular site - #1. the site is slightly sloppy, so pitching a larger tent might be harder. #2. there's not enough space around the fire ring, hard to put more chairs around it. Overall, excellent location, family had a fun camping trip.

The Lodgepole Campground is a great base to explore Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. For a great long weekend itinerary, check our my blog post about our trip. http://www.jasondanielshaw.com/best-weekend-camping-itinerary-for-sequoia-kings-canyon-national-parks/
