Campsites are clean and maintained. Only negative is that they are close to one another

We stayed at campsite B14, and it was too close to the next campsite. The trailhead marker for the hike to Mastodon Peak from the campground was not prominent and the trailhead was difficult to find.

Quiet campground with wide open view of the stars at night and a good jumping off place to visit the other parts of Joshua Tree.

Remember it is reserved online only. The elevation makes it chilly, dress in layers. Nice stop off of 10 heading west.

The stars were very visible and although it was hot when we camped, we appreciated having water and toilets available. We could also hear the night sounds of the animals which was very exciting. There are beautiful hiking areas around and not having wifi or internet is also a plus! It was also nice to have a ranger station at the bottom of the hill.

Very nice campgrounds! The campground is far from the hikes and driving back and forth seemed a lot so we ended up leaving a day early!

No shade, plenty of space for tents, right next to b16.

We would have appreciated somewhere nearby to purchase firewood.
We know that it isn't the fault of the campground, but it was incredibly windy while we were here.
The attached trail out to Lost Palms and Mastodon Peak is not only a great hike for all ages, but beautiful and the oasis is fascinating. Note: Dogs are not allowed on the trail.
Verizon was available on the top of Mastodon Peak or you could drive back out nearly to I-10.

The previous campers didn't understand reservations and thought they had the campground until midnight, so when we arrived in the evening they were settled in for the night in their car. We told them we had the reservation, and they were very confused about the dates. We let them stay since they were just sleeping in there car but they were obviously there "camping" there for an instagram post. They didn't even properly put out a fire. They kept turning on their car all night to turn on their car heater and then set off the alarm around 2 a.m. and were so embarrassed (and probably cold) that they left around 4:30 a.m. Other than that the campground was well kept, but I wish there was a campground host near by so we could have complained to get them kicked out of our site.

We went on Nov 8 2020 which was a very windy day and night. The wind made it very cold. The campsite B14 is for 2 tents, has flush toilets near by which was clean. The area is very dark by 6pm and we could see the stars very well. i think campsite B16 is huge (5 tents are ok) and B17 and B27 look good. We drove to other campsites to check it out. Other campsites like White Tank and Belle have big rocks and are spacious and more beautiful. Those campsites have characters; however, they only have vault toilets,Overall, Cottonwood is a choice for 1st campers to try out the camping life. you can hike 3-4 miles (begining level) around to make it to your campsite. There is a unmaintained trail to go to the peak, it is sort of difficult and risky to climb up the rocks but it is worth if you are being careful. You can take your own pace to climb. Going down the slope is much easier to climbing up. Great experience and will try White Tank campsite next time

Overall great experience. No Verizon Cell service in area. Area is relatively small and the only thing separating you from site B16 is the table. I was able to put my truck and a 10x10 easy up side by side so I think 2 compact cars will fit. We brought our dog which wasnt a bad thing except for the fact that his fur catches a lot of the sharp plants in the area. Just keep in mind that there are wildlife that come out at night.
