Stayed here the night before our Whitney attempt to help acclimate. Stayed in the group sites for the first time- highly recommend! Nice spaced out area, near the creek. Only thing is mosquitos abound! Also, two of the spigots nearest us didnt have water, but the bathroom one did. Staff are always friendly and helpful. No complaints at all!

The campground space was huge. Perfect for a group. Just a bit rocky, but its fine.

I grew up driving from L.A. to the Portal to climb Whitney. That was 50 years ago. Last week my wife, son, and and three others completed the 21-mile trail after spending a night at the Portal (not nearly enough time to acclimatize) and then summited 6 for 6 isn't bad! This is a magical place and the Portal Store is iconic. My only complaint; we needed a couple more nights.

Campsite was very nice with a good amount of distance between other campsites. Bathrooms were very clean each day that we were there.

I stayed at the Whitney Portal Campground Group Site #3 with ~12 friends/family from 5/12/22 - 5/15/22. The weather worked out perfectly for us, although the host said the Wednesday before we arrived was the coldest night they have experienced this year. We rode bicycles down the portal road and back up to the store, hiked to Lone Pine Lake, bouldered a little, and even climbed a chossy 2-pitch trad on the Candelight wall that wasnt on Mountain Project, but there was an anchor left behind from a climber before us. The portal was in prime condition. -Didn't see any bears-3 dogs were with us, on leash, no problems-Road noise wasnt a factor for us-Creek was stocked and flowing well-Camp hosts were extremely hospitable -Group Site #3 is awesome, but there are MANY tripping hazards. If you have young kids, elderly people, or handicapped people then this site probably isnt the one for you. We didnt have any accidents, but wanted to flag it for future visitors. *Climbers: please wear helmets and pack first aid, especially on Candlelight Wall area. Extremely chossy Granite that isnt climbed often and has extremely limited beta. Its fun climbing if youre properly prepared, but much more dangerous than say a typical Yosemite 2-pitch trad route.

The camp hosts and their dog were all helpful, warm and welcoming. Our group of 9 stayed at group site 3, and were very pleased with the location and size of the site. The bear boxes are oddly at the top of the site and the picnic tables and fire pit were at the middle and bottom of the slope, so you have to lug it all down and up the few big steps but thats not a huge deal. The faucets labeled as drinking water was both ran very brown, we thought initially that it was just because we barely turned it on, but unfortunately they were brown the entire time and we had to use our filter systems before feeling safe to drink or wash items with it. The site was conveniently located near the restrooms which were kept very clean. The 2 car parking spot limit for a 15 people max seems odd since there was not many other nearby side of road spots to park the extra cars, but luckily we found extra spots every night so it wasnt an issue for us. Overall, beautiful well maintained campground with convenient close location to the beginning of the Mt. Whitney trail.

This was for group camp site 3. The regular campsites are great, though a little too close together, but the group camp sites are weirdly positioned and it's not clear where the boundaries (even vaguely) begin or end. Also, the only restroom is quite far away... not super convenient. That said, the campground generally super quiet, everyone was respectful, things were clean (the bathrooms were immaculate!), well maintained, etc.

The group campsite was clean and well kept. It was just as advertised and gave us a good location to start our day climbing Mt. Whitney
