The campsite we reserved (#39) was not really the best for us, as there was a steep dropoff from the campground road to the camp spot, making hauling a 50# ice chest down to the bear box a little treacherous. Otherwise it didn't seem like a bad spot. We ended up not staying there because--despite having a valid reservation at that site, for that night--someone else's name was on the campsite card on the post for that night. Guessing it was a clerical error, but I didn't want to deal with the thought of someone else coming in late at night expecting that spot. Since we were sleeping in the van anyway, and just really needed a place to park and secure our food without picking our way down a steep trail in the dark, we just moved on.

Stayed at site 39 on the edge of the campground and it was wonderful. You have to walk your things into the site since it's down the hill a bit, but the ambiance makes it worth it. Highly recommend this campground especially for the night before hiking.

The hosts at the Whitney Portal campground were very friendly and helpful. We really appreciated their welcoming attitude.

Good campsite. We had a campsite with a steep incline up and down about 20 feet would not get again due to hassle. However the views were great and it had a lot of privacy. Went for a dunk in the river.

Site 39 was great! Very secluded, but be prepared to carry all of your supplies down a 20 hill and to hike up each time you need to use the restroom. Parking space is up the hill across the street from your camping space.

If your hiking Whitney, get there a day or two early. You'll acclimate better and it will give you time to hike around the entire portal area. Scenery everywhere you look.
Early Oct was great. Perfect weather.
