The sites next to the stream are beautiful, especially site 51 in Lower Grays Meadow. Glenn's Tacqueria in Independence had wonderful food and friendly service. Mount Whitney is nearby and worth the trip.

I've camped here a handful of times now and each time has been absolutely wonderful. The views of the peaks are fantastic! The creek is beautiful and the sound of it is so great to fall asleep t and wake up to. The road in the campground is pretty torn up, but doable. Each site has a bear locker, fire ring, and picnic table. There are water spigots around the campground, but sometimes the water access is n/a, so always bring your own water for drinking/ washing dishes/ etc. The bathrooms have always been clean and not stinky, which I am thoroughly grateful for this!! Not many bugs, and most of the other guests are quiet after dark. This is an awesome place that's tucked away, but also close enough to town for provisions. And, it's a great base camp for Kearsarge Pass or any of the towering nearby peaks.

Been camping here for decades. It’s wild and rough. Quiet most of the time. Most sites not good for larger RVs.

It was a very quiet and relaxing place. The sound of nature at its best. No phones, no computers, no television. Just quiet. A place to stop and smell the trees.

We were delighted to have reserved a very peaceful campsite in the relatively empty Grays Meadows campground. Enjoyed dinner and went to bed at 8:30 and all was well until the headlights and dust from pickup truck pulling a massive rig woke us as an inconsiderate group pulled in next to us at 10:30 p.m. They proceeded to set up camp; backing and filling, "you're good, you're good" loud voices, leveling the rig with much squeaking, filling a generator (gasoline fumes coming into our van), starting the generator (exhaust fumes), and doing all the other things that normal people take care of in the daylight hours so not to bother others. It's a pretty place, to be sure, but no one can guarantee considerate neighbors.
