Pretty and well maintained campground. Well run. Kathy, the Host does a fantastic job managing the sites and dealing with a number of local bears that visit almost daily. Her work is well above an beyond what I presume the duties of a host should be. However, her knowledge and experience with the wild animals kept everyone safe in the campground on the numerous nights I was there. If only campers did their part, her job would be much easier. Come to this campground with the knowledge that you are in the wilderness and should act accordingly. Do your research and be prepared.

The camp hosts are wonderful, friendly and run a tight ship, coming by several times daily and monitoring the status of the campground. The only negative is there are a lot of big rocks in each site and not a lot of flat spots for tents. They let you move your tents to some of the common areas, if your neighbor does not mind. The campground is a great jumping off area if you love hiking, fishing or exploring as there are many trailheads at the end of the campground. Don’t forget to see the most amazing part and the origins of Mammoth at the old Mammoth Consolidated Mine Co ruins. Read about it online before you go and you will have a greater understanding. As always in this area obey all bear safety and food storage rules. p.s. the JMT and PCT exits off the Duck Lake/Pass train, so hikers coming off the trail can exit here to the shuttle into Mammoth via Lake Mary. Another of the reasons to camp here is all the beautiful lakes in this area (Mary, Twin, George, Mamie, Horseshoe) or trailhead, (Emerald, Arrowhead, Skelton, Heart, Duck, TJ, Crystal etc!). The nice bike path goes downhill to Mammoth but remember it’s all uphill in altitude (almost 9,000) so after a brew at one of the area breweries, it’s a climb back, unless you have an evoke! So take your vehicle if you need supplies or ride to one of the two Lake Mary general stores or Twin Lake store or showers. Fishing was good in the upper lakes, we did catch and release but met a hiker who got a 5 lb. rainbow trout out of Twin Lakes! Devils Postpile is a hop and skip drive past Mammoth’s main ski lodge (which has mountain bike trails in summer). Check opening times for Devils Postpile, another must see as it is a geological wonder and .5 mile from the parking/shuttle area.
