Amazing experience. Cabin was cleaned and well stocked.

We love the hike in and out. The stars we amazing. The flys in the cabin were prevalent this trip! But that is okay. BRING YOUR OWN DISH RAGS. Just a helpful hint. Those rags up there are disgusting.

It was good. The propane and wood logs were stocked. It was great weather so that added to the experience. They resident Nene kind of like people too much and defecate all over the picnic area. Other campers probably feed them which is too bad, otherwise they are pretty cool. Peaceful beautiful area. Magnificent at night watching the full moon and listening to the resident Hawaiian petrels fly above.

Phenomenal, otherworldly setting. The bunk pads were suitably comfortable, and there were plenty of utensils and and cooking gas for meal prep. We went to sleep to the sound of ua'u (Hawaiian petrels) serenading us and woke up to a flock of nene (Hawaiian geese) outside the cabin. The best experience from my whole trip to Maui.

What a great spot. It's a shame that as a small time creator, I'm not allowed to post videos without a costly permit. Hopefully this changes soon with the explore act.

Great job to the Rangers for keeping the cabin stocked and maintained. Had a great time.

Notice to the park superintendent-Holua Cabin needs work.Ive been going for 45 years, Ive never seen it so dirty and in such disrepair.Shame! It was shocking to see it.Its neither expensive or time consuming to bring it back as its been for decades. Two people, a few days, some paint and cleaning supplies, and a few carpentry supplies for the kitchen cabinets, is all thats needed.

The park was closed due to post fire clean-up. Unable to use reservation, the funds were returned. Would have been nice to have been offered a future reservation date.

we forgot to lock the door before going to bed. a person entered the cabin around 11:30pm when we were all asleep. they walked around, shined their headlamp in our faces and then left without saying a single word. we followed them outside to confront them but they ran into the crater and then shut off their headlamp, obscuring their location. very unsettling experience. stay safe out there.

The park was great! The cabin was good too. It was super wet when our group went and we stayed warm and dry in the Holua cabin. Previous campers left extra soap and fuel. There is a lot of backup fuel for Coleman (propane) type stoves and smaller ones like a Jetboil (isobutane mix). There were dishes, utensils, pots, etc. It's well stocked.

Hiking Haleakal National Park is a special experience and highly recommended. If you go, please take the time to appreciate the rules. This is culturally sacred place and a very fragile ecosystem.

Well, I was just checking to see if there were ANY openings in the crater, and as luck would have it, there was one. So we built a trip around that. The nature of the system makes it VERY difficult to find success, but I can't think of any other way to structure it. Friends were stunned at my chance success.

I love the place and we had an overall great time but there were mice running about eating through our food.

Stayed two nights - Great facility with rustic, historic charm. There was some leftover gear and supplies from past hikers but overall cabin was clean, well maintained, and similar to other CCC-era cabins we've stayed in at other National Parks. While there are still issues with the water tap inside the cabin, water was readily available from the tank immediately behind it. The picnic table out front was popular with day hikers stopping for a break. In addition to the provided propane burner, there were over a dozen mostly-full isobutane canisters left behind in one of the cabinets for use with individual camp stoves (aka jetboils, pocket rockets, etc). We ran the wood stove one night but overall found it comfortable inside the cabin with 15-30 degree bags even without the fire.

If you go outside at night you can hear eerie cries of the endangered 'ua'a or hawaiian petrel on the cliffs above, however they were not loud enough to interfere with sleeping inside the cabin. During the day several nēnē would regularly hang out on the front lawn.

We had intermittent clouds and fog come up through the Ko'olau Gap to the cabin, in general hiking the mile or so down to the Silversword Trail Loop would get us out of the clouds to enjoy the sunsets and stars.

Had so much fun, trails were great, not much trash along the way, holua cabin was in great shape. The water catchment was broken though.

The provided locker combo for the wood locker was incorrect so we couldnʻt access our locker. The water faucets inside and out of the cabin donʻt work. There was no water in the tank next to the cabin.
The cabin itself wasnʻt very clean and is accumulating items from past campers. A lot of left over food in the cabin, dirty dishes, sleeping bag, jacket, lights left behind. We packed out some of the left behind items.
Both the park and the other hikers need to step it up and be more respectful of the facilities.

Love Haleakala. We were advised there was no running water in the cabin. Fortunately there were several gallon jugs so we could fill from under the water tank. Now there is water in the horse pasture which is appreciated as hauling water up the hill has been a chore. We were able to get a fire going with new logs..bring fire starter. Full Milkyway overhead.

What an amazing experience. I would add to be careful on the wood floors and benches. The floor seem perfect for dancing without shoes and they are, but they are also old and well, I have a piece of the cabin as a souvenir....lol. overall one of the best times iv had in my life.
Mahalo for the opportunity to visit this sacred space.

Absolutely the next best place to heaven…the agency has promoted the upkeep of the cabins, the trails and the general overall natural beauty of Haleakalā!

My husband and I spent the night in the Holua cabin. We were happy that we stayed warm with the only 3 logs provided, but they were the type of logs that burned for hours. Purchase wood starters at the Visitor Center. The bunks had thick foam mattresses covered by plastic that I could easily disinfect with Clorox wipes. We actually stacked several together to make our beds more comfortable. The cabin holds 12 people, but it was only he and I. There was a single burner propane stove. The propane tank was behind a wall in a locked room. The pipe came through the wall and a valve was there to turn on the gas. We were able to boil water and make coffee although we still took iodine tablets for water purification. The kitchen is very dirty and falling apart. We were actually surprised to even see a kitchen. It needs a complete overhaul. There is a very large sturdy picnic table in the center of the room that unfortunately it seems everyone decided to carve their names/initials for the past 20 years. There are large windows in the cabin to allow an extremely amazing view of the volcano. It was so beautiful and peaceful. We have tent camped before in the volcano and it was COLD at night, but the stars were amazing . . . actually breathtaking. In the morning there was drizzling rain and a rainbow appeared close to our camp. Simply magical. I have no words. Unfortunately, our night in the cabin, although very comfy, the weather was cloudy and rainy. We didn't see stars and had to dry out our gear that got wet when we hiked out. We can't wait to go back and try one of the other cabins. I'm now trying to get a reservation in December. Hoping to be successful as it is hard on recreation.gov. If you love the outdoors, you have to put this on your bucket list. IT IS AN AMAZING AND FULLFILLING EXPERIENCE. BTW - We are in our early 60s and had no problem hiking down the switchback to the cabin and back out. Thanks for reading. Have a wonderful time!
