Cabins are rustic, and outhouses are precisely what you think they would be, so be prepared for the smell and conditions. Usually, there is toilet paper, but if you are concerned, bring one roll to help your peace of mind. You need to carry everything in and out, so consider that when packing food. Summer stays could be dry, and water catchments might not have water. Be prepared to carry water on your hike for your time in the crater.

Aloha, our group of 12 had the opportunity to stay at the Paliku cabin this past Saturday. After hiking 10 miles in heavy mist, wind and rain, it was nice to be able to spend the night indoors. Here are some details about our stay that I thought might be helpful for future visitors. The cabin had four triple bunk beds and a great large table for the group. The kitchen was stocked with large pots for boiling water, a kettle, pans, bowls, plates, utensils, and mugs. There was a large propane burner stove with propane provided lined through the wall with a master shut-off switch; four small wood logs for the wood burning stove; and plenty of toilet paper in the nearby outhouse. I mention these last three items because when our group arrived at the summit trailhead we were greeted with a temporary NPS sign saying the cabins would not have propane, wood or toilet paper. We packed two small gas stoves and some TP to be safe. Given that I received three emails regarding my trip the week prior, including one the day before, it would be nice if the NPS could confirm 24 hours in advance if there would be propane/wood/toilet paper available so groups could plan accordingly. The NPS also recommends bringing your own cleaning supplies to sanitize the cabin. I also highly recommend bringing in some Clorox wipes, dish soap and sponges to wipe down the kitchen area and table as we found mice turds on the counters. There is a hook in the ceiling to hang your trash and hooks of the bunkbeds to hang your packs overnight so that the mice don't get into them. The wood burning stove worked alright once we got it going but the logs provided were not enough to dry out our gear and were done in a few hours. The NPS recommends buying additional logs and I do as well, although given the wet conditions often found at Paliku, maybe they could provide a few more and just build it into the nightly rate. Overall our group enjoyed ourselves and a big Mahalo to the NPS for providing this experience!

Paliku cabin is definitely our favorite! On another note- Holua cabin needs a little bit of work, lots of things that are broken, also some trash that is inside cabinets ( we did take some old trash with us, also found some trash near the cabin that was probably sitting there hidden in a bush for a few months, because the plastic bag was falling apart). This cabin gets used a lot more and probably needs a bit more attention from the stuff members. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy this majestic place.

Love Palik cabin. Dishes, silverware, pots, pans, and propane stove all provided. Plus an allotted number of logs for the wood burning stove.

We stayed 2 nights at Paliku cabin. Delighted to find the cabin in great shape and surprisingly well-stocked with pots/pans/dishes/utensils/propane. A few mice inspected our gear the first night but ranger provided a trap the second and we blocked the gap under the front door with dishrags--much quieter second night. So great to see how the native vegatation has boomed with the removal of feral goats and pigs!! Great job, NPS and neighbors!!! A true national and global treasure. We exited down Kaupo Gap and, yes, NPS is serious when they say the trail beyond the park boundary is unmaintained by them. Easy to follow the ranch road for the most part (watch for that pedestrian gate when you first encounter deer fence just below the park!). The last 1/2 mile just above Kaupo ranch and village is the toughest to find. The NPS trail leaves the open ranch road, and the signs showing this junction are buried in roadside vegetation. You wind through lantana and other weeds following what really amounts to a cow/deer path. There are a few NPS post signs but, again, these are tough to see in the weeds. The last 200 yards is through an active goat paddock with overhead guinea grass--thank goodness the goats and cows have eaten the grass down in patches so you can work your way down to the road and trailhead pretty easily. Leave a solid hour for this last bit of the hike, and plan on walking the ranch road out to the Kaupo ranch office--gates and potholes make it tough for a vehicle to get to the trailhead itself.

We enjoyed staying at Paliku Cabin in Haleakala on December 20, 2023, with a family of 93 siblings and our grown kids. There was little toilet paper when we arrived, and the rangers come over and resupplied us. They were staying at the ranger cabin, fortunately. We had a delicious warm dinner, thanks to the gas burner, and the wood burning stove. It had rained all day, and we got an early nightin bed by 8 pm. The next morning, my daughter was surprised to find a mouse had eaten her dry oatmeal meant for breakfast, and another mouse had eaten through a plastic snack container of nuts, chocolate and dried fruit, that I left in my backpack on the floor. Lesson learned: food in the kitchen and food left on the dining table were not nibbled by mice.

One of the best experiences of my life to hike in to Paliku solo and spend the night with your own thoughts in peace. Cannot recommend enough

Had such an amazing trip. But I really wish there could be a way for local people to book The Haleakala cabins before nonresidents. It’s almost impossible to book the cabins- this is the first time I was able to in almost 4 years. Before that I could be able to book once of twice a year.

It was wonderful easy to use, it was upsetting to hike in a Bunch of gear to the last farthest away cabin and find out there are entire sets of kitchen utensils - plates, cups, utensils, pots, pans etc. A complete kitchen. Would have saved a bunch of weight to know that before hand.

Please update website for future people.

The cabin was spectacular! The code for the logs was off by 1 # so if your code isn't working just try changing each number until you get it unlocked. The logs were really challenging to lite but thankfully we hiked in with a duraflame so that really helped. I would also recommend bringing a tiny container of lighter fluid to start the logs. We also had a rat friend come in around 4:30am so don't be surprised if you hear some noise while you're sleeping. The views from the cabin are gorgeous!

Our backpacking weekend was awesome! Seeing the clouds in and out of the crater made the views even more stunning.

Good tip to know: Visitor center opens at 8:30am so if you want to get last minute advice from the rangers, plan your drive/start time accordingly. Gaiters helped on sliding sands trail. The cabin and outhouses were very clean. The lowest temp we experienced was 43 deg.

This was a Blaeautiful place and we were blessed to see this national park. We also enjoyed seeing all the native flora and fauna.

We very much enjoyed our overnight stay at the Paliku Cabin. The cabin was as clean as expected. The propane stove worked as it should. And we were allotted 3 logs for the fire place which sufficiently warmed the cabin and dryed our wet shoes and clothes from a long soggy hike in. The supplies mattress were fine.

The trail system was well marked and maintained. However the last ~1.5 miles before the cabin was quite muddy and in some places impossible to pass without submerging our shoes. Maybe this was due to a very rainy period on Maui (but it could be the norm for this part of the trail).

Enjoy!
