Beautiful campground. Have stayed here every fall for the last three years. Really close to a great creek trail. Some things to consider: no cell service, so come prepared however you need to for that. Knowing directions to your hiking trailhead the next morning, meeting people at the campground, etc. There's a signal ~15 min outside of the campground. And there's always maps the rangers can give you. Their firewood burns well and it's very convenient to just get it there (when they're open) but it's expensive. Almost $10 per bundle. Each bundle burned about an hour. So just a few considerations for newcomers! Love the Smokies and plan on coming back for many more years :)

We stayed in early September in site N07. It's a spacious site that's right on the creek. It's wooded on one side, so it's a little more private than some other sites. We loved that we could walk right to the creek edge from our site. From what we could see, it appeared that the nearby sites on the creek were more of a drop off situation. Restrooms were also close by.Elkmont's camp store is not a walk through and browse facility. They have a wall mounted display case of the limited items they sell. You then walk up to a window with an attendant inside and tell them what you want. They have some snack items and basic supplies you might need, as well as ice and wood.As far as the negative. We knew there were no showers, just sinks with cold water and flush toilets. We came prepared for that. However, the bathrooms are filthy (both at Elkmont and Cades Cove). I'm not sure what the park service cleaning routine is, but it seemed non-existent to us. We suspect they empty trash (in the bathrooms that have trash cans) and that's it. You also need to know that there's no hand soap in the campground bathrooms. We learned that since these facilities need to remain available to campers 24/7 this is the way it has to be due to bears who will come in the restrooms because of the soap. We wanted to mention it so others can come prepared to carry a small soap with them.

Location is excellent on The creek, however, there was inadequate sanitation stations. We used porta-potties as we were told there was work being done on the septic system, but during the two week stay we saw nothing being worked on and we’re informed by the staff that this delay was due to improper management of the job contractor. Beware of the volunteer staff. One couple, in spite of being called the campground ’host’, he harassed us and our guests during our entire 2 week stay. This couple should not be allowed to be in this position, and merited a notorious reputation from multiple other guests. The concession stand that sold ice, firewood, and other necessities was closed for the duration of our stay which meant we had to made a 40 minute round trip into town for ice. Completely unacceptable. We were told that management was dragging their feet securing another contract for the business. This was in the middle of summer!! We were quite disappointed with these managerial failures. This is one of our favorites campgrounds and we were struggling on many levels with this trip.

Loved the site and the campground in general. Many sites near or within sound of creek/river. Good hikes nearby… especially liked Jakes Creek to Cucumber Gap and back to Elkmont via Little River. Volunteers at Elkmont homes were a wealth of knowledge… thanks Doug Little. Wastewater system was undergoing changes so restroom access which was a bummer, but portapotties we’re some of best I have used as far as cleanliness/maintenance. Website was incorrect as it said restrooms wer open 2hrs in am and pm… should have been updated when decision was made to close completely. Also a bummer … there was no availability of ice or wood at campground as there had been in years past.

Cleanest port-a-pots I have ever used. We appreciated the heads up about them and were a little apprehensive, but in the end it was fine.

If there are speed tests submitted for a campground the campsite icons will be colored based on the average download speed and the border will be colored based on the average upload speed.
In this example Campsite #123 has very good download speeds and decent upload speeds. If a campsite has a solid yellow color it means there was no data speed detected in the test(s). Clicking on a campsite icon reveals more details.
