My family of 4 tent camped at two sites in Elkmont Campground. The first site (L05) was good, but was surrounded by poison ivy, which led to the difficult task of getting my 3 year old to not touch anything green. We had some loud neighbors at that site, but that's part of staying at a campground. The second site (M05) had an issue with the pad where the tent is supposed to get set up pooled with water when it rained. I have a quality Nemo tent, but when it is sitting in what develops into standing water there was understandable some moisture that made its way into the tent. Amazingly we had no issues at all with mosquitoes. The bathroom was clean as can be expected for a campground, and it was nice the bathrooms also had an external deep sink for cleaning dishes, and a water fountain/spicket for filling bottles and cleaning equipment. There were signs warning against swimming in the river, but we enjoyed cooling down in the river. There is a nice spot next to the bridge where there isn't any currant and the water was a little warmer. My 8 year old and I had fun swimming down the current through the light rapids. Some people brought tubes, which have been fun. Also be careful for the poison ivy on the way to the water. Registration was easy. After hours check in was easy. The grounds looked well cared for, and Elkmont was a fairly centrally located position to get to the various hikes, drives, etc.

My friends and I have been camping at Elkmont every year in the fall for the last 40+ years. We love the campground and it's access to many hiking trails, the trailheads for many of which are accessible by simply walking to them from your campsite. This year's visit was rainier than usual, with the threat of high winds and some road closures. National Park Service personnel were very helpful during this time and provide a lot of information.
