There was a lot to be said about Elkmont's location, particularly as it relates to the synchronis fireflies. Also, it's relatively close proximity to Gatlinburg for supplies or a dinner out. The condition of the bathrooms left a lot to be desired. The volunteers were not all particularly friendly. There was also this rather odd insistence on staying on the asphalt at the campsite, even when it meant that NOT staying on the asphalt meant (the car parked) on gravel. Back to the good, great proximity to good hiking and there were very friendly volunteers also (more than not).

Loved the location. Loved the spots on the water, would look to reserve one of those next time (I bet they fill up quickly!).

First time camping in the park, and elkmont was wonderful—quiet, even though it was close to full, and a great location for walking up to view the synchronous fireflies. Heard dozens of birds we don’t know, and barred owls every night. We WILL be back!
