We love Elkmont especially in November when the campground is very quiet. This year though, it seemed like the Gatlinburg strip on a Saturday night in the 70s. I could not believe the number of people who just cruised through. One might say oh those were campers. Sorry, there just weren't that many actual campers, that's why we book for November. I think some attention should be paid to the non-camper cruising traffic. It sure would have made our experience as nice as it has been in the past. We'll book Cosby for our April and November trips this year. No one seeks out Cosby for a cruise through.

We did not realize there was a separate lottery for parking spaces at the firefly viewing area beginning this year. Before now the lottery was for the trolly that transported people in and out of the park. We have always booked our campsite at Elkmont in December as soon as they open to try to camp during peak emergence. I always book an accessible campsite due to mobility issues.
In the evening, we were told all parking spots at the viewing area were full, including accessible spots, and the only way up was to walk (while paved, it is still uphill). The whole reason for booking at Elkmont was to have access to the firefly viewing site, and now it is no longer easily accessible to me.

Additionally, I was told I’d need a parking pass at the ranger station and could get one at Metcalf Bottoms or Sugarlands, but nothing on the machine at Metcalf Bottoms indicated that people with handicap placards/plates were exempt, and we didn’t find this out until two days later at Sugarlands, so we wasted $15.

Fellow entomologists suggested some alternative viewing areas outside the park so we may be making other arrangements for our annual pilgrimage in future. I love camping at GSMNP but this year I really struggled with basic ADA accommodation.

Such a beautiful campsite! We were there for the fireflies but thoroughly enjoyed our time in the campground among the beautiful green trees and vegetation!

The only complaint is that the Elkmont Campground was using porta potties even though they have nice restroom buildings there, but explained that they were short of service personnel to clean them.

We like camping at Elkmont because it is so close to Gatlinburg. Great and friendly campground.

We loved our stay here but have two major suggestions for the campground! First is Late check in from 9-10am is a real set back for folks who want to get they're day started early. We drove from Florida on Saturday September 5th. Arrived at the campground at 8pm unable to check in. We were up at 6:30am the following morning ready to get our day started at Clingmans Dome but had to stick around the campground for an extra 3 hours until 9am for the ranger to let us do late check in. Could we have written a note? Something that could have confirmed "hey we are here and we made it"! This would make the most out of the visit for out of state campers like us who were chomping at the bit to go see the beauty of the smokeys. Second concern is that same morning we waited until 9am to check in with the ranger we had our money ready to buy wood and ice and decided not to buy it because we could just buy it later that afternoon when we returned from our day of hiking and with our groceries to cook out on the grill! Traffic was horrible that day but we made it to the campground with our groceries by 6pm ready to buy wood, build a fire and put the food on ice until we started grilling that evening. THERE WAS NO WOOD AND NO ICE LEFT. We kicked ourself for not buying wood and ice that morning but we had zero idea the supplies could run out! There was no ranger to help us and we just wish we had seen a sign that said "supplies was limited and that what you see now at 9am might RUN OUT by 3pm". We were devastated. We found wood on the ground by the river after collecting for close to an hour. So please keep these things in mind! Easy adjustments and fixes could make a short trip to beautiful elkmont more functional for future campers!Thank you,

This(6A) was an excellent duplex campsite. The parking level has a dedicated space for one tent and a few steps downstairs has space for two campsites, a picnic bench, and a fire pit.The site is beautifully covered with trees and very spacious. Its also secluded from other sites. One can take the glimpse of the lake through the gaps between tree. And, there is a path to take you to the lake.We loved staying here and definitely recommend this national forest and this campsite for a nature retreat.

The restrooms were very clean. The Rangers were wonderful. I had a couple of questions and the took the time required to answer them so I could understand and they did it with a smile.
