Visitors should be encouraged to arrive prior to nightfall. Because I-75 was shut down due to a fatal accident, and missing the info about not bringing an RV across ?Wear's Valley road, we arrived after dark. The "hurricane relief" people at Sugarlands could NOT direct us to the water supply. Once we arrived, due to large boulders lining the driveway, we could not get into our site. The wonderful camp hosts found us another site and helped us get there. Once set up, Elkmont was nice. Beautiful creek, quiet, walking trails from the campground. The campground itself is nice as long as you have a site level enough for your particular RV or are using a tent.

We loved staying at Elkmont Campground, it was so convenient to stay inside the National Park and not have a long drive. Although there were many bathroom facilities, they were all pretty disgusting. If I had a broom and cleaning supplies with me in my tent, those bathrooms would have gotten a thorough cleaning. I also supplied the bathroom closest to me with hand soap. For $30.00 per night, a clean bathroom would have been appreciated.

Campground was beautiful. Although bathrooms were out of order, the campground accommodated us with porta potties that seemed to be cleaned and emptied every other day. We stayed for a week and had a very memorable trip. Deb the volunteer Park Ranger was extremely kind and helpful.

PROS: - I love GSMNP. I love Elkmont Campground. The people are great. Everyone is friendly and having a good time. The camping space was awesome. We visited for the Synchronous Firefly Event and that was really something.
CONS: The website needs to be updated. The website said the camp store was open with ice, firewood and general supplies. The camp store was CLOSED - as in locked up and had not been open in a very long time. The website said the bathrooms were only going to be open a few hours each morning and evening. The bathrooms were CLOSED all day and all night. There were plenty of Port-a-Potties, that were pumped and cleaned each day. The Gatlinburg Trolley NO LONGER visits Elkmont Campground - I assume because of Covid-19. I should have researched that a bit more. The pay phone that we have used in past years is no longer there. In summary, since we did not have a car, we were pretty much stuck. We had to pull up the RV and go to Pigeon Forge for ice and firewood. So if you are in that situation (no car), get your firewood and ice before you get to the campground and make sure to have completed all of your electronic communications and coordination.
