Do not leave any unattended food or coolers at your campsite! We witnessed a park ranger entering our campsite neighbor's tent and removing coolers and bins when the campers were away. There is a man on a golf cart at this campground who (IMO overzealously) enforces this rule. Our neighbors were not the only people cited or scolded for having coolers out. I am not sure all of them were away at the time.

Overall, our experience at Elkmont was fine, but one thing I didn't realize was that many of the campsite are walk-up--i.e. they're not right next to your car. Our campsite was set further back from the road, so we carried our things further than we expected to. Not a huge deal, but I didn't realize that beforehand. Also, our neighbors had a large dog they let roam around their campsite off-leash, which I didn't appreciate in general and would have been very upset about had I been the parents with two small children (their neighbor on the other side). But the most frustrating thing was waking up at 3 am to the party sounds of some big group who were so far away we couldn't see them, but we could sure hear them. I was under the impression there were quiet hours at the campsite, but they were clearly not being enforced. The year before, we camped at Cosby Campground, which was much more out of the way, but I would do that again over the experience we had at Elkmont.

Great campground however I am accustomed to my nearby Shenandoah campgrounds and was surprised and very exhausted from the fact that camp sites don’t have food storage boxes at each camp site. Considering the bear country this should be done. We went with a walk out site that is normally nice however hauling all our cooking supplies and food each meal was nuts without a provided food storage. Other than that it was beautiful and nice. If we come back we will utilize a drive in tent site.
