Site I reserved was a great site except the restroom was locked and out of order. When checking in the rangers were informed site chosen because of being by restroom and did not have the courtesy to inform me it was closed. Very unhappy with their customer service.

Ive camped in Elkmont almost yearly since the early 80s and always enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately for the past two years the experience has been marred by overzealous park rangers. Last year I was written up for not properly storing food, a gallon jug of water. This year I rented a walk in site without the intention to camp. Our plan was to use the site only for campfire cooking and a home base for swimming and relaxing. When i explained this to the ranger I was confronted with a snippy no day use rule. So, I changed my plan to 2 people camping, even though I had no intention to camp. Rules are rules but there is such a thing as common sense and tact. A jug of water is not food and a bear can smell. Renting a campsite without the intention to camp has less impact than camping with the same amount of revenue collected. I have come to think that some of these park rangers have forgotten they are employees of the taxpayers and have come to believe they are their overlords. These unsavory attitudes can serve to distract from an otherwise great outdoor experience.

My only criticism, was the unavailability of permanent restrooms. While I understand that the restrooms require maintenance from time to time, their closing during the busiest time of camping season is unfortunate. Replacement with ports-poties is entirely insufficient, and the prota-poties near my campsite were disgusting. Adding to this shortcoming, was that there seemed to be no work at all being done to the restrooms. There has to be a better way. That said, the campsite itself was lovely. The staff went the extra mile to be helpful.

Restrooms were closed but that wasn't really a problem for us. The portable ones were extremely clean when we arrived and were cleaned again the morning we were packing up. The rangers were friendly and helpful even when needed my car jumped. Lots of great, beautiful hikes nice and close.
