Beautiful, clean front-country campground! Lots of towering trees and shade. Great place to use as a base camp for Great Smokies day hikes or better yet - relax and enjoy a campfire before kicking off a backpacking adventure or do the same to decompress after one (if not both!)

Elkmont is a lovely campground (even in the rain ;-) and we really enjoyed the Wildflower Pilgrimage events. There was a beautiful hike that you could walk to from the back of the campground, as well as many other wonderful hikes nearby. Elkmont is as "centrally located" as you can get!

My first camping trip was with my brother in the early 90's...he has camped at Elkmont since the 1980's, not sure of exact dates...I have told many of my friends that Elkmont is my favorite of all. My son was with me this year in June......he loved it........all the camp host are nice and very helpful, appreciate what they do to keep us safe. The rangers are wonderful too.....I am a senior so I really don't care much for going to gatlinburg, but we do go to pigeon forge to shop for groceries prn......other than that, we just love to stay at the campground....thanks to all for keeping us safe.........my next trip will be July 23 this year

The campground loop roads could really use some repairs, as there are some massive pot holes. (I had to negotiate some to back my camper, and I observed one lady fall into one, and one take out a kid on a bicycle.) As the area is a watershed, expect slick mud in the campsites, and even very deep mud in some of the lower sites, but at least the tent pads are raised. There were plenty of park staff and rangers patrolling the campground during the day, but not at night, which would have been nice for enforcement of quiet hours and food storage. This is a very popular campground, and even though the campground signs and reservation system will indicate that the campground is full, there will be many empty sites. Not that I mind a less crowded campground, but most of those sites left empty are the nicer and waterside sites. Which I suspect people are reserving in advance of their intended stay, without intension of occupying them every night, just so that they can be assured to have a prime spot when they finally arrive. Even though the 'rules' indicate that sites need to be occupied from the first night of the reservation, this obviously goes unchecked and not enforced.
