We had a great time at Elkmont Campground, after 2 nights at Cade's Cove Campground in early June. The small creek at the back of our campsite was great for wading/exploring, butterflies everywhere (and amazingly, not a ton of mosquitos - at that time at least). The timing also worked out well for the amazing experience of the synchronous fireflies. Walking from our campsite to the James Creek Trail area was pretty easy, so no need to worry about driving and parking in the area fighting the crowds. Once it got fully dark the firefly show was incredible (my 6yr old daughter described it as "magical" and we all agreed!) and definitely the highlight of our stay at Elkmont. For the size of the campground I was surprised that there wasn't more of a Camp Store similar to Cade's Cove campgrounds. There was a small store area that did sell a few items other than the firewood/ice, it was just relatively limited compared to the larger store at Cade's Cove. The bathrooms near our campsite were overall relatively clean and well maintained. Overall we had a great day/night at Elkmont campground and could definitely have spent more time there exploring the various trails nearby.

Large site that was somewhat un-level. Convenient location inside SMNP.

Need to get the Bathrooms finished ASAP.... People are making a mess in them and around them.
When making a reservation for a Camper it should be easily WELL KNOWN that you have chosen a NON Generator spot.
I have LOVED elkMont campground for many years, but with cover 19 it and everything else is going down hill....

As far as port-a-potties go, they were nice ones. But seriously port-a-potties? The reservation stated the regular bathrooms would be open for a short time in am and pm. They were not. And maybe there was no ice sold because of the water problem. But wood? Why not sell wood? Much rain, but still we love Elkmont and it was so less crowded because many, many campsites were occupied for the evening only-no campers. We had to leave early due to a medical emergency and we easily got a refund for the unused days..

Very nice peaceful campground with well spaced sites. The rustic primitive site we stayed at was right on a small stream.

It would have been nice to have the restrooms open instead of porta-Johns due to a septic problem within the campground.
