The Cosby area of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park has several trails available. We walked up the Low Gap Trail in the direction of backcountry campsite #35. We have pictures of almost 20 wildflowers, many of which we had to look up in our flower book. The most interesting was the Woodland Stonecrop. We also saw a Trillium with a yellow flower and Catesby's Trillium with narrow white petals. This is in late April. Most of our previous visits to GSMNP were in the summer and we hadn't seen Trilliums in flower in 32 years! We also saw some Bellwort and a patch or two of Showy Orchids.
The Cosby Campground also has a very short and easy Nature Trail wandering through the woods and on bridges over parts of Cosby Creek. What was really appreciated was a series of placards designed for children that told a story involving salamanders. We applaud GSMNP for educating our next generation on the myriad of life forms found in the park.
Our next camping trip next month will be to the Cataloochee Campground (not with an RV for obvious reasons) followed hopefully by a night or two at 5,000ft in Balsam Mountain.
We appreciate all the folks that protect the natural environment in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and provide nice campgrounds and well-maintained backcountry campsites for our enjoyment.
