We had a wonderful time celebrating Mother's Day with our children and grandchildren at Smokemont. We grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, with lots of fixings on the side. Our grandchildren enjoyed riding their bikes around F Loop.

Would have been great except that the trails were so poorly marked we spent 4 1/2 Hours on a hike we didn't plan for. PLEASE work on the trail signs.

We stayed at site F30 in the RV-only loop and had full shade, was level, and plenty of room for our 22’ trailer and tow vehicle. The site is not directly on the creek but it was close enough to hear it. Several campers ran generators, but all were respectful of quiet hours. We enjoyed the nature trail and the trail along Bradley Fork, both accessed from the campground. Mingus Mill, a working grist mill, is nearby and was interesting. We aborted, due to rain, a day trip to Cataloochee to see the elk herd and historic buildings there, but there were plenty of elk in a field near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. We also enjoyed Mingo Falls just outside of Cherokee.

The F loop had trees surrounding the outer sites and a stream behind some. The inner area was mostly no trees. There was a "hill" of trees which was lovely. I saw no common water spigots. The restroom was open and there were water fountains but the lack of spigots to fill larger jugs was a bit inconvenient. The A, B, C and D loops looked nice. Mostly level sites. Hiking trail was not well marked on paper but convenient. 2 dump stations in an exit area was convenient. Overall, loved it here.

Lovely place, unless your neighbors run their generator all day long. I really don't understand why the NPS doesn't ban generator use in all loops. The noise and air pollution is so against everything they stand for. If they feel they need to cater to people who need all conveniences while camping, put in some electric sites, but please let the rest enjoy the serenity of the park!

When we first got to our campsite there was an issue of food and trash which was left by the previous campers. The young man who represented the park came and got the mess up and checked back with us off and on the whole time we were there.
