It was great. Loved when the Elk came through the camp site. Weather was great for it to be in the winter.

I have camped at this campground since I was 8 years old. I am now 70 years old. Over the years it has changed, but always for the good. I have wonderful memories of camping with my parents, my sister and my two brothers. After marriage I introduced my husband to the joys of camping which led him to becoming a Scout leader with our two boys. My mother was always up for a good hike, so I have hiked many trails in the GSM. One of our daily hike was the short nature trail here at Smokemount. One memorable time was when my brother ran ahead of the group with my Mothers shouted warning of Youll run into a bear. No sooner than said, he came running back towards us from around a curve in the trail. Eye wide with excitement. I just saw a bear.

Great campsite. Just sorry that leaf blowing started early on Sunday. No chance for a lie in. Loved the nature trail.

The camping at Smokemont was very nice and conveniently close to multiple trails and locations we wanted to go too. We ended up doing the Kuwohi Observation tower, and the hike to Andrews Bald on our trip. If you want to do either of these, plan ahead because the cars line up to snag the limited parking nearby the trails to these locations. Both locations also require lots of walking on inclines/steps so be prepared to get a real workout in before enjoying the beautiful views these places provide. The weather was pretty foggy when we did our trip, however this did not prevent our enjoyment of the views, as it is really neat to see the fog roll down the mountains, even if it wasn't that sunny and nice out.

I think there should be a deadline for campers coming in and setting up late. it's not fair for people who are asleep usually by 10 pm , then here come folks close to you driving up, setting up, slamming cars doors, talking loud, sometime cooking, etc. this is very aggervating! Impossible to sleep. NO one should be allowed to come in and set up after 8 pm. Doyle Webb

The campground was clean and well maintained even for the off season. The Smokemont Loop trail is great but if you have a service dog be aware there is a log bridge crossing at about the half way point. It's approximately 40' across the creek and about 10' above the creek. We just doubled back and hiked the other side of the loop. That increased the mileage but we were basically the only ones on the trail.

I needed a weekend getaway. Smokemont was beautiful. I got to see Elk twice, they are huge and gorgeous. CLINGMANS DOME is beautiful, however I was extremely winded take your time. Anywhere you drive in the park is beautiful.

Everything was lovely and when we got in a bind and needed to call a tow truck, the rangers and volunteers were so helpful! I truly dont know what we would have done without them. Weve been here a couple of times and plan to be back at some point!

The campsite is excellent, nestled between a spectacular river and several hills just past the visitor center in North Carolina. The site has walking access to multiple trailheads and served as a fantastic entry to the park for hikers.

Overall a good stay, the Smoky Mountains are gorgeous so you really can't go wrong. Everything as it states, drive in car spot, firepit with grill-top, space for a tent and/or hammock. We stayed right next to the bathrooms so there was easy access there, although some spots in the campgrounds were definitely a distance. There's a beautiful river that runs alongside the campsite that we explored for a good while. We posted up a hammock on a tree and also set up a small tent on the tent pad. All seemed well until we went hiking for a while in the rain & when we came back, the tent pad was flooded. That seemed to be a major issue for all the campers around us as well. People were using buckets to scoop out the water, others were trying to dig trenches. We picked our tent up since it was small and moved it outside the tent pad for the night, but most weren't because they were either bigger tents and/or it's a rule to keep all the tents on the tent pads. All in all, I would check out where your campsite will be if you have any younger/older or disabled people needing to be near bathrooms & I'd check the weather beforehand.

This is a really fun camp ground. You can listen to the small river while chilling out at your campsite and the sites are pretty flat, making set up easy. It rained while we were there, and we didnt run into much of an issue with standing water either. I will say, the other side of the park near Gatlinburg is closer to more of the family friendly trails and popular spots, but the drive through the park isnt bad and theres still plenty to do. One other slight down side is if you need to make an emergency food or gas run, you have a little bit more of a drive than the other side of the park too, but again the camp grounds are nice enough to make up for it.

Nice campground, nice facilities and helpful park staff, but the lack of privacy will be off-putting for some, and the lack of bear boxes is disappointing. I traveled through the park on my bicycle and had to camp very close to the campground office because the only bear box at the campground was located there. This will be a nuisance for anyone camping without a hard sided vehicle โ€” hikers and bikers beware.

We were in the B loop near the check in office. It was a pleasant stay, but just be aware that there is only one bathroom on that end so it gets used fairly heavily...sometimes by those who are not very careful with their excrement which means it stays there until a camper cleans it up or the maintenance crew comes the next day...

This was my first camping experience. I reserved our camp spot a couple of days before we arrived and when we got there someone else was parked in it. We communicated that to them and they moved, it would be nice if the park monitored that more closely so that those interactions donโ€™t have to take place. We were awoken around 10:30pm by the campers next to us that started playing club music on their portable speaker. They were drinking heavily, as evidenced by their behavior and the handles of liquor on the table. The park website said quiet hours are from 10pm-6am but the ranger next to our campsite never came out to enforce it. We asked the campers to keep it down but they did not listen. After an hour of trying to get some sleep we packed up and went to a hotel. It was a very frustrating and exhausting experience. The rangers should enforce the quiet hours more strictly. We were at campsite 30 in the Smoky Mountain National Park on New Years Eve.

The sites here are closer and more open than most National Parks we have stayed at before. Good walks from campsite and close to a visitors center for advice. One thing I did notice was the lack of staff after 5 pm, in other NP campsites there usually has been rangers driving through every now and then. Not sure if COVID related/ staff cut backs. Park was extremely busy, traffic jams and unable to park at trailheads unless we got us before dawn- we did twice. So be prepared for early starts- bonus sunrise in the mountains!
