Nice facilities except for no showers. Wildlife and hiking nearby.

We spent a night recently at Balsam Mountain Campground. Even though it rained nearly 100% of the time and we were in hammocks, it was an excellent night. I'm usually there every year for several days and will always come back!

Quiet , clean, all the wildflowers were not mowed down. Great place to enjoy and photograph. NPS keeps the bathrooms spotless. The then campground host Ron Larsen picked up trash and talked with campers knowing the area for the best directions. We will be going back!!!!

Site was immaculately kept. The views from the campsite were non-existent. The picnic grounds had better views. No shower was available.

I chose this campground because I was travelling in the dead of summer and the altitude of the campground was promising for cooler nights. The one night I stay at the campground was indeed cool, probably 15 degrees below that of lower elevations.

However, I would not recommend this campground for test camping. The campsites are WAY too close together, there is absolutely no privacy. My campsite (tent pad) was maybe 25 feet from two other tent pads, with nothing blocking views or noise. Also, there are is no electrical, so expect people with campers to be running generators all day, which may or be 50 feet from your tent. There is a section of 5 sites that are tent only (no vehicle access), but even those are way too close together. To get to one of those sites, you have to walk right through somebody else's site. Unacceptable. In my opinion, this campground needs to decrease the number of sites by about 50% to make the sites reasonably far apart.

My original reservation was for two nights, and I skipped my second night and moved to a different campground because I was so unsatisfied.

Facilities were fine, everything was clean and check-in was a breeze.

This was my first time staying at this campground. The caretaker Ron was very helpful in getting me signed in and providing information about the campground. He suggested that I take in a sunset just pass the CG about 100 yds down the flat creek trail. The sun sets just behind Clingman's Dome that you can see from this viewpoint. I highly recommend this campground. I believe all spots have tent pads and fire rings.

Balsam mountain campground site 14 reviewPlenty of room to park, length and width. Parking is in the sun and a bit pitched in two directions, about two legos front to back and about one lego from the outside edge to the curb. The parking spot gets plenty of sun most of the day. The tent pad gets a decent amount of shade most parts of the day, some strong sun around mid-day. Shade all day long under the old conifers that are great for hammocks. Reception - spotty T-Mobile reception on the phone, spotty with the WeBoost and 5g mifi hot spot, but enough to keep in touch. Got starlink working best spots in the road in front of the sprinter or back on spot 16 by their tent pad. It's a pretty remote campground, paved road all the way in, so much better than Cattaloochee. Some people are just here for one night, some for several nights. It's pretty quiet and low noise overall, no generators running, no kids running around. Almost always a breeze which is moderated by the trees that protect from all sides. Never a line in the bathroom. Very friendly and helpful camp host.

No site map exists to allow a camper to know the campsite ahead of arrival. Some sites are nice but some are cramped. Mine was in the vicinity of three other tents all very close, and it was not pleasant.

The camp hosts were very helpful in making sure your experience was totally enjoyable. It is a beautiful and clean campground with clean restrooms. There is water available but no electricity so bring head lamps or flashlights. Each campsite is well taken care of, but all sites are very close to each one. Two things that would be nice to update would be to provide bear proof food storage for each site and if possible make sites further apart.
