Start as early as possible and take plenty of water.
The campground is nice, but noisy (barking dogs and screaming children) and in most of the sites you are very close to your neighbors. If you are used to dispersed camping, this may be bothersome to you.
The staff/rangers in the park are wonderful- very courteous and helpful.
We tried the Medano Pass primitive road. Went about 6 miles in a V-8 Ford Explorer. It is a thrill- but be prepared for one of the most difficult roads I have been on in Colorado. We stopped half way up, not so much that I didn't think the Explorer could make it, but more because I was worried about causing damage to my vehicle. If you have a small jeep or similar vehicle to use, you shouldn't have any problem.
