In Fort Garland at the corner of the gas station there is a road 159? and it leads to San Luis, the oldest town in CO.In the center of the small town across the cafe is a 1/2 mile trail that leads to an adobe church. Along the way are life size bronze statues depicting the crucification of Christ.

Camp host was friendly and informative. The campground was well maintained and bathrooms were clean. Would absolutely come back.

The site was great, with potable water faucets available in places in addition to at the bathrooms. Bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. I saw a couple deer walking around. Only bad thing I encountered is the camp store apparently has very irregular hours. I went to buy some firewood and there was a "back at 2:00" sign on the door, it was a little after 2:30. I had to drive a couple miles down the road to get what I needed.

Good little tent site, be advised the parking is small and parallel.

Not the best campsite. Small and sloping, although it was convenient to toilets and overall the campground is nice.

Excellent restrooms with a slop sink outside for washing dishes, a large bear box at every site, plenty of water faucets for drinking water, good amount of vegetation for privacy between sites, and a foot trail runs through the site that leads to the dunes.

The first night was great! Nice and quiet weekday. Friday night was awful. There were multiple parties (and I mean parties, not groups) in the campground. Loud music, yelling, dogs barking, and cars driving around until 2am. There was not a camp host to enforce any rules and I felt unsafe as a single person with a kid. The absolute opposite of the quiet time in nature I was hoping for while visiting the national park.

I only had one night, but it was such a wonderful restorative 24 hours. No time for long hikes, so really appreciated the shorter Sand Sheet interpretive trail from the visitor center. Breathtaking yellows of the valle, then dunes, then mountains at sunset, moving slowly and stopping at each explanatory sign to be sure I could take it all in. Same next morning on the little Montville Nature Trail. Who knew yellow could have so many shades. One BIG gripe though: City level Street light GLARE from ridiculously bright lights around all the campground bathrooms!!!! Please, please, please remove those outside lights. Leaving on a light inside so folks can locate those buildings at night is plenty. I am quite certain that I am not the only tent camper that hates the bright, star blocking glare from those lights illuminating the tent all night.

We had an incredible time at Great Sand Dunes National Park! We were expecting to have a great time but left having had more fun than we anticipated. We went in late October so the aspens were gorgeous and the temperatures much cooler than during the summer months. We began by hiking the Mosca Pass Trail, then took our 4WD Jeep on the primitive road a few miles north into the park. Be prepared to get sand everywhere and hiking up the dunes is harder than you'd think but so worth it once you get to the top. The campground itself was immaculate with pristine bathrooms and extremely well-maintained grounds. Grab some sand boards from Oasis a few miles outside the park and have a blast sandboarding the dunes! Can't wait to go back!

The campground itself was great, though most appropriate for tents & campers less than 30 feet. Proximity to the NP and nice sites make it a "must stay". Low rating is strictly due to the poor site management. We had a site listed as 35' which should have been (and is now) a tent site. We were immediately confronted upon arrival with a 30' travel trailer by a camp host who initially forgot who the customer was - polite but confrontational. Had other sites been managed according to no show policies, we should have been able to be moved to a larger site instead of waiting for almost an hour to get an OK to set up. In our case, Site #86 was reserved from 06/25-06/29 and on 06/27-06/29 is was completely empty, no sign of being occupied. Sites #64, #78 & #81 were further examples of being reserved but after 24 hours completely unoccupied, and should've been opened back up for another reservation. Per the website, these 4 sites booked, but actually sitting empty, in a campground which is always "fully booked". Why have a "no show" policy if it is not in practice for the benefit of campers who really want the sites?

Pinon Flats lived up to everything we have heard about it. The view of the Dunes and surrounding mountains was breath taking. Camp sites were clean and the bathrooms were clean as well. Sometimes the faucets would not shut off which was bothersome as we hate wasting water. The Park Ranger was very nice and professional and also very helpful. The people at the surrounding stores were very nice and had a good supply of the what we were looking for. I can see why these campsites are so hard to get.

Great campground however site 59 is not good for a pop-up. We were essentially in a wide part of the loop road.

Some campsites are better than others. Preferably, chose a site that either has a view of the dunes or is on the outside of one of the two loops. Trying hiking the sand barefoot but bring along shoes/sandals in case the surface gets too hot.

I Very nice campground. A little tight for larger rigs or rigs with slide outs. Our spot was just a pull out along side the road. We had trouble leveling and we only opened our slide out half way for fear of it being in traffic.
