Loved staying at Pion Flats Campground. Waking up to the dunes right outside our tent was unreal. The site was clean, peaceful, and just a short walk to Medano Creek. Bathrooms were decent (no showers though), and the stargazing at night was absolutely magical. It got a bit windy and buggy at times, but honestly, it just added to the adventure. Would 100% camp here again.

We loved it here. We had campsite 57 which was fantastic - you could see the dunes through the trees, but it also felt very private, and I felt like we have a good amount of space and trees between us and our neighbors. The clean flush toilets and running water in sinks we a nice bonus! We enjoyed walking along the Dune Trail each morning - it puts you at a place to cross the river and get to the dunes that is much less crowded than coming from the main parking lot. We brought a kite which was great with the winds. We went in early May - the river was great - very shallow but wide and fun for our 7 yr old to play in. We had crazy wind some of the time, lots of rain and some snow one night, and plenty of sunshine and calm times too - a little of everything.

We had the best time at Pinon Flats Campground! We were tent camping and have a larger tent that sleeps five - so site 57 on Loop 2 was the PERFECT location for us - plus it has a view of the dunes thru the trees. This site is also close to two bathrooms and has water access on the camp site....making doing dishes easy. Make sure to hike Zapata Falls about 3 miles outside of the campground...it was partially frozen on our May 4th hike. Well worth the 1/2 mile hike in. Probably the quietest campground we've ever stayed in.
