The hiking was great, and the views are beautiful.

My husband and I stayed at Pion Flats for 3 nights. Our campsite had beautiful views of the dunes. The bathrooms were clean and the camp store was convenient. We loved being able to walk from the campground to hiking trails and the dunes. We also enjoyed exploring Medano Pass (4x4 is required). Definitely recommend and would camp here again.

We loved our stay at Pion Flats Campground while exploring the Great Sand Dunes. The campgrounds bathrooms were VERY clean, they had nice paved roads and the camp sites were clean and provided ample space between sites. Were looking forward to our next trip back to the Dunes!

We had terribly windy weather with red flag warnings for the first weekend of May. I wondered if we would be able to get firewood...we could not. Nothing on the website warned us of this. Maybe if the camp store was opened when we arrived, they would have been selling it? Not sure but the Oasis store on the way in had a crabby person act like I was stupid for not knowing they couldn't sell it. I'm not from here and not used to these warnings so I had no idea. Anyway, the site itself (42) was a great spot if the weather would have cooperated. But temps got below freezing at night then add the wind in....it was cold. We also have 3 kids (5 and under). The tent stakes don't stay in the ground well either. Someone else had a few large metal stakes stuck in the wood around the tent pad so we used those where we could. The picnic table was on mostly flat ground with two trees near it. The parking spot fits one car easily...two...itd be tight. We could hear noise from the group sites further away late into the night but it was in the distance so not bad. The bathrooms were also all closed for renovations. The port-a-potties were the cleanest I've ever seen. I would have much preferred bathrooms with a 5 and 3 year old though bc its hard to help them when two people barely fit in a port-a-potty. Hand washing stations were next to each grouping. But no trash can for the paper towels so we had to walk back with them everytime and put in our trash. It was fine. Probably has to do with the bears. We reserved this 6 months out and a big selling point was that they had bathrooms while many others in the area don't. I also really wish with the warnings, they would add what is not available bc of them. People still had campfires though since the wind died down for a few hours in the evening. Kids loved sliding down the dunes. To get there though, you must walk through water. No way to find spots your feet could stay dry at that point. Crazy windy days, be prepared for sand blasting

This us a very scrappy campground - the campsite was rough and there were no working restrooms.

This was our second time at the Dunes but our first time staying in Loop 1 of Pion! We had site 42, which sits right on the main bend leading up to the campground gate (cars and people were not an issue even at night) - this is a beautiful spot for stargazing, especially on a moonless night, but due to no trees there is also no shade for your tent(s), bear locker, and table; we were able to use the trees beside the parking spot to put up our feet after a morning hike up High Dune (the creek was still trickling at this time, enough to dip our feet in). We also hiked up and around Zapata Falls the second day, which is a five mile drive out from the park. Overall a great time of hikes and views! Keep in mind it does get windy in this site come sunset and will last for a bit, and since we had no trees to cover us (and you cannot use a vehicle as a shield in this location) it did hit our firepit hard - didn't put it out, but we did have to keep checking for sparks in the brush from flying embers. Oh we also had a very good phone signal in our spot - last year we did not have any cell service in Loop 2.

Pinion Flats campground was wonderful. Proximity to the dunes cant be beat! The camp store staff was so friendly and the store was well stocked. Having an air pump on site saved me as my tire started going flat on the trip there. (Bring your own soap to wash your hands in the bathroom.)

The campground overlooks the dunes. It is a beautiful view! The bathrooms have flush toilets and running water. It was quiet, peaceful, and nice. I would come back again.

It is beautiful and has so much to do. We also visited the gator place and alamosa. My family climbed the tallest dunes and we relaxed bear the shallow water.
