This is one of the best national park campgrounds I've stayed at--and I've stayed at many! It is clean, well-set-up, and in a perfect position in relationship to the park's attractions. You can walk right from your site here to the dunes! It is also centrally located in the dark-sky zone, so you can easily walk to the dunes to stargaze or see incredible night skies right from your site!

We truly wish we had planned to stay longer! Great Sand Dunes was our last stop on our two-week and six national park vacation. We were seriously considering just stopping at the visitor center, which just had its grand opening, and getting our junior ranger badges and leaving. Little did we know, Great Sand Dunes and Pinon Flats campground was like a vacation from our vacation! The campgrounds are a short walk from the Sand and creek so we could set up our rooftop tent and walk or hike to the water or the nearby trails. The site was relatively flat and easy to get our truck level. There are several sites that are not level so choose wisely for your situation.

Had a great view of the Sand Dunes from my tent. We did have a bit of weather come in and had to scamper down the dunes but other than that the weather was great.
Good

Amazing views from the site. Bathrooms were good. Camping allowed us to enjoy the dunes at sunset. Stars would have been amazing if the moon wasn't so large the night we were there.

Wonderful views of the dunes. A bit noisy at night from partiers but whatev? Spacious campsites.

Amazing views! I happened to arrive right after a snowstorm and got to see the Dunes covered in snow. Pros: the wind is strong and will start up your campfire real quick. Cons: the wind is real strong, so weight your tent down so it won’t blow away.
Hot showers, secluded camp spots, and friendly staff at the conveniently located general store.

Campground was really pretty! Mountains, sand dunes all around. Nearby hikes are really pretty. We were a little confused about the state wide fire ban here in Colorado. Campfires were everywhere even on very windy nights. Park rangers do not enforce it.

We generally enjoyed our stay. The campsites were neat and had a nice sized flat area for camp set up. The proximity to the main features of the park was great. Our interactions with park staff during the day were pleasant. The campsite did lack privacy that we are used to when camping since they're so closely spaced. We were quite disappointed by an interaction with one of the park staff after dark. My fiancee and I were enjoying a quiet night by the campfire when we were approached suddenly by a staff member who then questioned whether we had marijuana (which we did not) because he had noticed a "strong odor" (which we had not noticed) coming from that area of the campground. This quickly changed the mood of our nice quiet evening into one where we felt less comfortable in our campsite and also disturbed our dog who had been sound asleep prior and was now alert and scared. We understand that the federal park has stricter laws than surrounding Colorado state that they feel the need to enforce, but enforcement shouldn't infringe on the peaceful enjoyment of campers. We suggest reviewing your enforcement tactics so that they are less intrusive on park quests.

A great campsite with awesome access to the dunes. The area was clean and beautiful and the folks in the campsites neighboring ours were not loud at all.

Mobile Data Speed Map
#123
If there are speed tests submitted for a campground the campsite icons will be colored based on the average download speed and the border will be colored based on the average upload speed.
In this example Campsite #123 has very good download speeds and decent upload speeds. If a campsite has a solid yellow color it means there was no data speed detected in the test(s). Clicking on a campsite icon reveals more details.
