This campsite gave us a clear and unobstructed view of the dunes. The entire campground is pretty nice.

Site 36 had a great view of the dunes. Bathrooms had TP and running water. See the milky way on a clear night

Great spot with a great view of the dunes. Minimal shade, great spot if you depend on solar. Spot is at a pretty extreme grade to the point that we were unable to completely level our 23 foot trailer (tho we got close!) Note that there are no hot showers in the park. There are some spots to rinse off the sand.

Just stayed one night making our way across the country back to St. Louis. Will definitely be back and spend more time on the trails. Views are spectacular.

Staff was helpful and friendly. Campground was very clean. Sites could use a bit more separation and wind shelter. Our parking spot was at a steep and wonky angle. We ended up moving to a tent site after the people there gave up on setting up in the fierce wind. Bathrooms need hooks/flat surfaces.

We had a nice, short visit at The Great Sand Dunes, and we landed a prime RV/Tent site in Pinon Flats. The bathrooms were very clean as were the campgrounds. We enjoyed our stay. If only someone could control the wind..whoo! Next year, were going in May.

Very scenic place to camp and explore the sand dunes. Campgrounds are very clean, good bathroom facilities. Only quibble is that almost all the campsites are quite close to one another.. not a problem really if in an RV but tent campers may notice a lack a privacy. Also.. our 'back-in' RV campsite was paved but on a considerable slope..bring extra leveling blocks/pads if you want to level your rig out. The 'pull through' RV sites looked flatter but were right on the camp loop road..zero privacy. In general the RV camp sites are pretty small.. the NP descriptions are mostly accurate so do not plan to bring a long Class A or trailer here. Not a lot of trails for mtn biking and hiking.. there is a primative road that runs between the campground and the dunes but has considerable vehicle traffic. Sand Dunes overlook hike is about 1 mile, moderate to easy climb of about 300 vertical feet.. offer great views of the dunes and Sangre de Cristo mtns.. trailhead is at the upper part of campground loop 2.. we were there is April which is considered the windiest time of year.. and it certainly was! The campsites on the west side of loop 1 are most exposed to wind.. glad we were in a truck camper.. if tent camping I would look for campsites on the east side of loop 1 or on loop 2 where trees offer more protection from the prevailing SW winds.

We are so glad we decided to keep our reservation despite poor weather forecast. The weather turned out fine. The site was lovely and the camp host and other staff were very helpful.

Beautiful park. The campsites are very small and difficult to get into with an RV travel trailer.

we were in 036 and loved the view! there was a lot of ant activity at sunset and during the day, but no ant bites. Really grateful for the clean bathrooms and outdoor sinks for cleaning dishes.

Beautiful place, but be prepared for WIND and SAND in everything. Rain cover on your tent will not keep out the sand getting into your tent

The campground was great. The other campers weren't too close and everything was ship-shape and Bristol fashion!

Great campground with the worst mosquitoes I've ever seen. I suspect July 1 is the peak mosquito season in the Sand Dunes. I would love to be there when we didn't get eaten alive, because Pinon Flats is awesome.
