Loved our time exploring Great Sand Dunes NP. Our campsite was beautiful and overlooked the dunes. It was perfect to wake up to every morning. Facilities were well managed and maybe some of the cleanest weve been to in the parks.

Such a beautiful and peaceful place. We reserved site 32 (loop 1) which provided easy access to the dunes and had incredible views. Some deer walked right through our campsite at one point! We booked the site about 5 months in advance as it's so popular. We stayed in April and got lucky with weather (no snow, just a little rain, not too cold). Seems like a very family-friendly place as kids were safely riding their bikes around the loop.Cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen at a campground!!

The campground setting is outstanding. Beautiful views and great access to park attractions. Our site was a good size, pretty well separated from adjoining sites and quiet.
Unfortunately, all the restrooms were closed for construction, with porta-potties set up next to the restrooms. Since we had a small camp trailer with our own bath, this was not a major issue. I made the mistake of trying to use a porta-potty while heading back to camp after a hike. Disgusting! I tried two of the four units. Both had feces smeared on the seats, toilet paper scattered on the floor, and appeared to be quite full. After peeking in two, I could not bring myself to try a third. Thankfully it was not far back to camp and my own bath. I'm not sure how anyone could have used those for their bathrooms while camping here.

Gorgeous views, and I was thrilled with the site driveway length. They're definitely improving quite a bit, and while I was very understanding of having to use porta johns during bathroom construction, the upkeep was my only complaint. The porta johns weren't serviced for an entire busy weekend, and my our departure Monday, they were all but depleted of toilet paper. Aside from this very rare situation, we had a wonderful time.
It was difficult to make a reservation for the campground because it is the only one inside the Park. On our first night we had a great view of the dunes. We have a class A 35 foot and we fit into 32. We needed to move to the 2nd loop space 59. It was a pull through but pretty narrow so we kept our street side slides in. Also our rig stands pretty tall at nearly 13 feet and as careful as I was, I still hit a number of lower tree branches. Even so, we would stay in this campground again in a heartbeat. It is beautiful!
Great Sand Dunes is a beautiful place to visit. In addition to the unique dunes there are incredible views of the sky at night. The campsites are spacious and well maintained.
Booked site 32 in early October. This site has views of the dunes, has neighbors on only one side (east side), is really close to the trail down to the dunes. It has essentially zero shade though, and isn't far from the 4x4 road so you hear jeeps at times. Was otherwise quiet, and very nice, no wind while we were there.

Our campground site had a dunes view. Sunset one night was amazing. We loved being able to walk out to the sand directly from camp; our dogs thought we were at the beach! This was our third national park campground on this trip. Every one has been unique and beautiful!

Always, I imagine camping in Pinion Flats to be better than it actually is in reality. Sorry to say that swims of mosquitos invariably ruin the experience for me. So perhaps, my decades of camping within the Great Sand Dunes has come to an end. Next time, I'll camp nearby, and go in for a day trip only.
Great park. The mosquito problem though needs to be addressed. These weren't the come out near dusk type that we've encountered in year's past. These were flesh seeking ambush attackers that were relentless all day even in the afternoon heat. I had over 20 bites in the first 10 minutes on site trying to get the trailer parked and leveled. Relentless. Pack spray and other items to keep yourself protected. Also keep in mind you are about 30-45 minutes away from Alamosa or Salida if you need a store that sells fuses, propane, etc...
