It was stunning, clean, and well patrolled. It was a beautiful site with a short walk to the bathrooms, and the dune trail. Plenty of shade, and ample space for a small tent. Highly Recommend!

Very clean camp sites and bathrooms with phenomenal views.

Pion Flats was beautiful. A direct view of the majestic dunes at sunset as we arrived, and a dawn view of them, within an easy walk, made our stay there worth handling the bugs and lack of other amenities.

Campsites are pretty small, decently close together but not horrible. There are definitely a couple of absolute gems at the campground, but I guess you need to visit to know which ones are great! It can get windy, so make sure to stake your tent. Weather in mid-July was absolutely perfect. It was raining when I arrived, but stopped quickly and I was able to walk on the sand for hours, as it was not hot at all and clumpy so it wasn't getting everywhere. Loved my experience!

First time being here definitely recommended it to complete your Sand Dunes visit. It is well kept and clean and they even have built in boxes to store your food items so the bears can't get in. There is a store and restaurants not too far couple miles before the park entrance, you can rent sandboards there for $20 until 7:00pm daily. Lots of trails for hiking. Zapata falls is 7 miles from the visitor center but once you start heading into the mountain there is a warning the 3miles road is steep and rough. I didn't not drive it for that reason. Great experience. 10/10

A full campground means your neighbors are near, but it is a well setup facility. The bathrooms are being renovated, which means they have port-a-johns, which isn’t awesome but at least there are facilities. Gentleman working the camp store was awesome, really appreciated him. Didn’t realize the visitor center closed so early (4:30pm while I was there at least). Make sure you have enough big spray & sunscreen!

When I reserved, I selected a site on the west side of the campground, and I was not disappointed. My campsite itself was surrounded by piñon pines, sheltering my site from any wind, but just a short walk down the campground drive (like just two campsites over) and I had an amazing view of the dunes for sunset. An official trail leads right from the campground to the dunes for convenient access. I had some car trouble come up on the way to the park, so I asked the man who was working the campground store; without hesitation he recommended a mechanic to me in town who took great care of me the following morning.

Maybe the best national park to visit with young kids.
