Ive wanted to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon since 4th grade, when my teacher read Marguerite Henrys Brighty of the Grand Canyon to my class. We loved the little wild donkey and were drawn to Henrys descriptions of this rugged and secluded spot. Pulling into Jacob Lake in the early afternoon on Wednesday, July 9, we made our final pit stop (and grabbed some Jacob Lake Inn cookies). The local park ranger happened to mention a wildfire caused by a lightning strike that could affect some of the places we might try to hike; she was told this fire, named Dragon Bravo, was being managed. Other than the imposing name, I didnt think much about it. At dusk on July 10, just as we left a Cape Royal sunset, two park rangers stepped into the road wildly waving for us to stop. Youve got to evacuate the park immediately. She informed us about a second out-of-control wildfire near Jacob Lake that threatened to cut off the only exit out of the park. Drive toward Page. There was no time for further conversation. As we hurried the 45 minute drive back to the North Rim Campground we could also see for the first time the smoke from the other, smaller Dragon Bravo fire to the west in the fading light. When we finally turned into the North Rim Village in the dark we could see the flashing lights of emergency vehicles at every major intersection. Ominously, an ambulance was parked at the Kaibab Trailhead, with a person inside that we could hear loudly vomiting. At the entrance to the campground we were stopped again, but let through to pack our tent. There was no one else in the campground. We were the last ones out. We drove through the darkness to Jacob Lake an hour away, where the glow from the growing White Sage wildfire lit up the northern sky, then further into the night to Page. It took 45 years for me to reach the North Rimon the very last day possible before it all burned down.

As I had hoped daily temperatures in the middle of July were comfortable, high of 80 and perfect sleeping temperatures at night. Site 18 was not close to the canyon edge, still had to hike for a view. The showers are run by the concession or not by the national park. Based on the poor reviews I did not check them out and would not count on them being usable during your stay. We booked reservations and had dinner at the lodge which was pretty disappointing food for the price but the view From the balconies at the lodge are spectacular and free.

I found visiting the North Rim for the first time was not only breathtaking but spectacular - much different than the beautiful SW mountains of Colorado I live in. The viewpoint drive to Cape Royal was scenic and beautiful as was our favorite 10 mile RT Widforss trail, the 2 mile Transept trail which goes to the Lodge and Visitor Center and the Bright Angel trail- outstanding views! Next visit, we would like to hike part of the North Kaibab trail. Biking was permitted and fun on the Bridle Path and parts of the Arizona trail.Theresa, the on duty camp host, was pleasant and helpful. The campground was pretty with the tall pines and the restrooms were clean. I do have a recommendation that the shower facility does need to be updated, repaired and kept clean. The campground store was very nice with camping gear, food choices, books and great gift ideas. The store employees were very friendly also.

Beautiful campground. Clean restrooms, spacious sites, views and hiking for miles. The only downside is the lodge employees' dorms are just across a small ravine so the loud, drunken parties went on until early morning. Certainly not the campground hosts responsibility or fault but reflected poorly on Forever Resorts/The Lodge and law enforcement for declining to intervene.

Great campsites with good spacing between sites. My only complaint was that the showers were closed.

Although the site we wanted was already reserved, the site we got was quite nice. It was clean and not too close to other sites. It was late in the season but good temp for hiking. The sunset the first night was gorgeous and there were many good photo ops all three days we were there.

A beautiful, crowd-free place to enjoy the Grand Canyon. Our campsite was spacious and just a short walk to the rim where we were able to enjoy incredible sunsets. The camp store was fairly well stocked and even had local beer options. Showers were available for a small fee. The North Rim Lodge was about a mile away and had a gift shop, food, beer, a post office, and incredible views. Great and relaxing spot to enjoy the Grand Canyon!
