Very frustrating to see sites go empty but when we booked there were hardly any. We could have used a better site. The bike trails are not well marked. They sort of disappear at the village. The connection to the market is not clear etc. The trail to the rim from headquarters is not clear. We got mixed up with another building that was not on the map. There was a crosswalk there though. Nice showers but how the heck do you get laundry etc down there when there is no place to park a van camper! You would work up a sweat going back to maple loop.

I think better information on facilities at least 2-3 days ahead of time would have been helpful to me. I booked for 3 nights but left after 1 night.

The campsite parking spots (not the actual camping spots) were just plowed when I arrived. I could set up tent only on the car parking spot. Picnic tables were still inaccessible and there was no way to start a fire to keep us warmer at least before going to sleep. I was hoping to find a water spout but none was available for use so I made a 20-minute drive out again to ensure my dog and I had enough water overnight.

I understand that it may be early in the season to prepare, but I did make a call to the Mather campground information line 3-4 days earlier to ask about the snow situation, how many inches the snow base is, and she did not really seem to want to find out more information for me other than, "there is some snow on the ground, but it's melting fast." Giving me more information then would have been helpful. Then they call me 2 hours before the campsite check-in (I was already driving all the way from Tahoe) and left a voicemail to finally inform me some things are not ready. I don't think those sites should have been made available for the time I booked (and they should refund me) if there are no other amenities than car parking space for sleeping in and the toilet.

Stargazing was beautiful, though. No cell service until you drive higher up to nearby viewpoints, but it's a nice place to just disconnect. I'm sure it gets prettier later in the season.

We visited on Labor Day weekend - a Sunday - Tuesday. The grounds were well kept. The bathroom was nice...until TP ran out, no maintenance was done for a few days. I get it, it's labor day, maybe no cleaning, but it was somewhat gross. No TP, garbages were overflowing, sinks were backed up. My husband said the men's bathroom had no soap for multiple days. I mean, we're camping, so overall, I was just happy to have flushing toilets, but it got a bit gross. Overall, we'd be back for sure, just keep up on the maintenance a bit better.

The sites were good. Picnic table, fire pit, flat wood-chip filled areas for tents. The location is fantastic - no going in and out of the park and waiting in line! The water stations expect to see Elk. They are friendly, just in your face. Sites were big, didn't feel like people were on top of you. Not a big enforcement of quiet hours, didn't see more than one ranger a day drive by. Glad we didn't get crazies next door.

We went there during winter, and it was amazing! The campground was almost empty and very clean. It is also very close to the rim; we could ride our bikes there from the campground.
