Love the Grand Canyon campground especially with the shuttles! I was surprised at how packed the place was in Mid-Oct, mid-week! The camping area we had was quite big and we saw elk every morning and night. I was a bit disapponted in the restrooms - no counter area by the sinks and no place to wash dishes outside the restrooms. Also, the showers had limited hours closing at 6:00. Had these few things been better, I would have given a 5* because the Grand Canyon is absolutely gorgeous and a bucket list for sure!

Great location. Loved improvements in roads. Would appreciate new water faucets in bathroom to keep water flowing longer when pushing down the button. Also, adding additional hour for generator use in evening from 5-8 pm vs 6-8 pm would be appreciated. Thanks

The Campground was great. However, next time I visit the Grand Canyon, I would prefer to stay at one of the lodges on the Bright Angel viewpoint because it overlooks the canyon.
With the constantly changing light I now believe it is important to be as close to the canyon as possible.
Other than that, no regrets at all.
The Desertview campground is closer to the canyon but closed Oct 15.

Mathers Campground was probably the best campground I've ever stayed at. All of the facilities were kept extremely clean for the outdoors and the campground itself was very organized. The one stop recycle and trash receptacles were very convenient. It was far enough away from all the visitor shops and centers that it was quiet, but close enough to everything so it wasn't inconvenient. My favorite part was the laundromat because I was able to leave with clean laundry! I'm already planning my next camping trip here, I recommend.

I've camped at Mather Campground many times and always enjoy it. My one wish is that they would reduce the overnight lighting at the restrooms. This is supposed to be a dark sky park and yet the restroom lights illuminate the night at all the nearby campsites.

For it being such a big campground it was surprisingly quiet! The trees must make sounds muffled. Very cool that elk were hanging out by the water spouts. Bathrooms were clean enough. Camp host was so nice!!!

Second time at Mather and this site was beautiful - ground was mostly level for tent camping, fairly quiet, and partially shaded. The smell of juniper and pinyon pine was amazing and we saw lots of elk roaming through the campground. Love the proximity of this campsite to all of what the South Rim has to offer. A few things to note: the bathroom is right across from this campsite which is both a good and bad thing. The good: easy to walk to & relatively clean. The bad: lights on outside of bathroom shone onto our tent at night and hampered the view of the Milky Way & sometimes people would let the door slam, which would wake us up at night. Also, had a few campers from a site further away from the bathroom walk right through our site and through the vegetation that the elk eat, when they should've been walking through the designated trails/road. Regarding COVID, please wear a mask when you're in the bathroom - I'm sure I will get lots of "No's" on "was this review helpful?" from people who don't care that we're still in the middle of a pandemic and do not care about being respectful and looking out for their fellow human. But for those who are, please continue to wear a mask, as masks are required on all federal lands where social distancing can't be maintained, including campsites - there are signs on the door too. Water spigot behind bathroom was turned off while we were there. Also, we booked our site with the expectation that half the sites would be empty, as the campground alert we saw when booking was only offering select sites for the season. Not sure when and what changed their mind, but we never got a notice regarding the change.
