We had a group of 33 we had plenty of space however our campsite was right no top of the other campsite. There was access to 2 bathrooms on different ends of the campsite. All in all it was a great campsite but next time I would probably aim for one of the other ones to avoid being so close to the other campsite.

Mather Campground was excellent for our group size and affordable. The location, facilities, and staff were very helpful, especially Bob when we checked in. He gave us all the information we needed

We used Mathers as a quick overnighter before backpacking under the rim.

There is so much to do that is accessible from Mather Campground. The shuttle from the campground is free and takes you all over the park. The Rangers and people who work there are very friendly and helpful. Make it out to Hermits Rest and talk to Craig who works there, he'll give you a great tour! Go to the Kolb Studios and learn what they did. There is a museum in Bright Angel Lodge about the Harvey Girls. Learn what Fred Harvey created! And of course go to Yavapai Point and Geology Center. Find out why the rim of the Grand Canyon is at 8,000feet and the layers are parallel! There is so much to learn and enjoy. And why are there sea fossils on the rim? Don't forget a tour of the graveyard, many historical people buried there!

(My evaluation is for the group campsite loop) This is a peaceful, relatively well-run campsite. The location is beautiful (ponderosa pine forest); it is convenient to free park shuttles, a decent market for food, camping needs and souvenirs (a few hundred yards walk). The campsite is NOT on the rim.
For those choosing to walk, run or bike to the main visitor center and Mather Point via the Greenway walk/bicycle network, it is 1 - 1.5 miles. The shower/laundry facilities work well, but watch the closing times for cleaning. Some minor repairs are needed (water supply faucets leaked, no soap in restroom dispensers).

We stayed at group site 3 on the Sage loop. The park rangers were really friendly, as were the dining room workers in the Yipsilanti Lodge. The campsites we're nicely spaced and shaded. The bathroom was clean. We definitely appreciated our air mattress on the rocky (but not jagged) ground. Some of the group sites had more parking space than others. I think 3 vehicles could have fit by our site.

As we all know, securing a site is nearly impossible. We lucked into one released group camp site for the night we needed. It seemed like many sites remained empty? But it was clean, peaceful and by the way COLD and WINDY in May. We walked to the village market and to the overlooks at the south rim. Rode back on the free shuttle. The shuttle is a great way to get around once you've secured your rig and gear at the campground. Be prepared for ELEVATION and DRY air!

We were so glad to find Mather Campground open for groups as Covid begins to wane. The Park Service expected (and encouraged) appropriate health precautions while still allowing our group to operate largely as we were comfortable operating. The campsite was clean, quiet, and convenient. An overnight trip is perfect for making the most of hikes below the Rim. We definitely plan to be back!
