The area itself was very quiet and there is a significant amount of room between campsites.
I will definitely come back here again!
PS: Verizon wireless coverage was top notch and we even got 5G
In the morning I had a great little hike thanks to the recommendations of the two older shopkeepers/information guides at the historic Kolb Studio.
On my way down a park ranger was very friendly and conversational. He offered several good tips for my hike and then helped a woman suffering from dehydration/vertigo immediately after.
I had a world-class national park experience and you're all doing a fantastic job.
The whole operation at Grand Canyon -- and that's what it is, an operation -- is super impressive. Of course camping at Mather's not at all an isolated experience -- if you're a real purist I'd look elsewhere. (But if you're a real purist you're probably backpacking anyway.)
That said, given the importance of this 'national/natural monument' the set-up with the shuttle bus system, the friendly and informative rangers (not to mention the bus drivers, too!), the presence of a full-on supermarket (just a tad 'gouge-y' -- $6.59 for a bag of ice?) and well-maintained campground area, this is an environmentally educational, mind-boggingly large-scale experience that they've made REALLY affordable so every American, regardless their background/ethnicity/identification, can experience. And should.
Extra points to the rangers for telling us that it's OK to collect firewood outside the park (you can't inside the park); less than 2 miles south of Tusayan, the little town south of the main entrance, is Ten-X campground. Also a very pretty camping spot (one of the main overflow campgrounds; it was practically empty when we drove there) and much larger than Mather itself, Ten-X is a great place to chop up some downed limbs. That wood burned way better than the for-sale logs available inside the park.
Just go.
