We had a truly great family vacation at GNP for 8 nights, staying at Fish Creek campground. We loved being next to the lake, so we could walk down in the mornings and have coffee on the shore, jumping in the lake in the afternoons, and then settling into the camp site, which was surrounded by thick woods. The camp sites are close together, but the trees separated us nicely and overall the campground was very quiet. We brought in a rented 24 foot camper trailer, and we were able to easily fit it and our tow vehicle in the pull through site. We were a little surprised that the bathrooms at loop C were out of order, but the porta-potties were serviced regularly and were generally clean. There was also a notice posted that the water had a high level of manganese, and may be harmful to drink, so we brought in bottled water jugs and were able to refill them daily at the apgar visitor center, and other centers around the park. This was our first trip as a family to Glacier, and we went hiking every day, including to St. Mary's Falls, Two-Medicine Lake's Aster Falls, Hidden Lake at Logan Pass, and Avalanche Lake. I would highly recommend all of those hikes. We were able to see bighorn sheep, mountain goats, moose, deer, and a lot of other smaller wildlife. No bear sightings for us, but we were ok with that! We kept all our food in the car overnight and during the days, in coolers and dry boxes, and had no issues. I would highly recommend making some reservations for going to the sun road, and the Many Glacier shuttle ahead of time, as it is a hassle to go to the visitor center for internet access every night and try to book those at 7pm when released for the next day. We did it though, it is doable. Overall, one of my favorite vacations in a long time. It was actually really nice to be without mobile service for over a week.

The proximity to the lake was amazing, just about 50 short steps and you are at the waters edge with absolutely gorgeous views. On the other side it was a close proximity to the bathrooms which is good for convenience but also makes the noise and traffic busier. The site itself was pretty good, small pad for a tent, ours was a little larger for our family so we had to pitch it in the "driveway" where a car would normally pull through. Plenty of trees to hang hammocks on though. There are only showers available in one building of one loop and two of the four were out of service so there were long lines if you wanted one, otherwise no lines at 5am when I went. Beautiful campground though, would stay here again if I had the opportunity.

Awesome views from Lake McDonald. Super clean and easy to get to site. Sites are fairly private. Our stay was amazing!

We've never been camping in Glacier before. We originally were supposed to camp at St. Mary's but our reservation got cancelled due to flooding. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find another available reservation for the whole time but saw Fish Creek had one night available. We weren't going to go through all the work to camp for one night but we wanted to be able to get into Glacier so I reserved it, then got a hotel in Kalispell for the weekend. At check in the rangers spouted off all kinds of regulations around firewood. Honestly, I didn't pay attention b/c it was a non-issue for us but it sounded like a pain. After we parked in our "spot," went exploring for a few hours walking the trail, going down to the lake & Fish Creek. It was a beautiful area but we felt that all the camp sites were on top of each other - not our ideal camping setup. The people camping next to you are a tree trunk away. I'm glad we went into Glacier & spent a few hours but I'm also glad we didn't end up camping there. It was much more enjoyable for us to have just gone on a day trip.I'm open to attempting trying to camp at a few other campgrounds to see if any are better (roomier) than Fish Creek (though I suspect they're all probably going to be about the same - stacked). But we won't be going back to Fish Creek to camp.I am honestly very frustrated with the whole Recreation.gov app/trying to camp or even just get into Glacier. The app itself is extremely not user friendly. One minute it says a whole month is open, you click on a day & nothing is open. Then you discover that 1 day is available but there's a 2 day minimum so you can't even book the 1 day. Or you reserve the only 2 days left, then the next week, there's a ton of openings! I really don't like how complicated/commercialized they're making camping. Between making reservations, charging cancellation fees, not being able to check in until some places I saw were as late as 3pm, then you had to be checked out by 11am! Ridiculous!
