Based on the campground description, we expected to be camping in a forest, mainly in the shade, with some separation from neighbors. The walk-in distance to the site was doable, and we were glad the vault toilets weren’t far. But our campsite was basically dry grass, beaten out, in the sun, with nothing between us and site 12. I gave this site 3 stars only because of last minute cancellation, we didn’t have neighbors at the site right next to us. So we didn’t have to spend 2 nights and days staring at each other and listening to each other’s conversations. We had one tree over the picnic table so we did have some shade, but the birds also liked to sit up there and poop on everything. The bushes were crowding the table on the two long sides but the campground rules were clear that we weren’t allowed to cut any back. It was a good jumping-off point for our day trip up to Lava Canyon, June Lake, and the Trail of Two Forests on the south side of Mt. St. Helens, and reasonably quiet at night. We stayed Wednesday and Thursday nights, but by mid-morning Friday tons of people showed up and started taking all of the parking. Signage was clear the lot was only for current campers and these were mainly day users who didn’t want to pay the fee. Several walked down with floating/kayaking gear to an occupied campsite with river access (11) trying to get through and were told politely that the site was in use. In a way we were grateful our site had no river access. Wish we would have enjoyed it more; it sounded like a beautiful site and campground from the USFS description. I walked the loop and there was one first come first served site that was wonderful, site 3 I think. I didn’t particularly like any others. We used 8 gallons of water in less than 2 days. No water in campground or potable water nearby as far as I know. Little general store, cell service, pizza place about 7 miles west and 3 miles north.

Not exactly as it looked online. Site 12 and 13 are almost on top of each other. I reserved lot 13 weeks in advance but when I arrived it appeared to be reserved for another family (according to the reservation sheets in front of each site). I spent 4 hours waiting for the host to show up at the host site but nope. So I finally selected a site that said available. I had purchased for 3 nights. On the morning of day 3 a group of 30 people came through and said they couldn’t find the host so the previous day they just picked lots they like and reserved those (even though you are only supposed to book online where you can see dates of available sites or you show up and pick an empty site). They just decided to claim some. I had been at the falls and returned to the site and they said they were trying to find the host so they could kick me out since they had paid (I paid too and I was actually the one using the site but apparently that doesn’t matter if you are outnumbered and there is no host to lay down the law). Nobody ever did see the host the 3 days I was there. And when I heard there were 30 people (“at least” since they were hoping others would come and they could just use the little grassy island and turn that public space into their private campground) I realized that was gonna be one crazy night anyway so I left early, though I paid for three nights.

The camp sites themselves are good. 11-16 are WALK IN! this was not very clear on the map. But they are more private too. You can get to the river from some sites but they are all steep pathways. 11 is very private. 6 is the most private from the drive up sites.

Lots to do in the Moulton Falls area. Not much to do at Sunset itself. Was very crowded so hard to find room on the river. Lots of litter. :(. Moulton was clean and tons to do but a 15 minute drive from Sunset.

I wouldn’t stay at Sunset again unless it actually had a host and was cleaner.

There was an active logging road splitting the campground in half and starting very early, 4-5am, many logging trucks where driving though the campground. I do not know if this road is always active but it made the stay uncomfortable and we left early because of it.
